“Elder Brother, I was wrong and considering we have once been brother and sister, do not target me. To tell the truth, my life in Yu family has not been easy. Old Madam and Yu Pin Yan can only see Yu Xiang instead treated me as an outsider. I have been treading gingerly on thin ice all day long lest I would be kicked out of the house one day. It was still father, mother and elder brother who treated me the best. If I had known earlier, I would not have returned to Marquis Yongle manor but it’s too late to repent now.” Shedding tears as she spoke, her grief was truly genuine.

Shen Yuan Qi sized her up for a long time before he snorted softly, “Don’t, you should just stay compliantly in Yu family. Do you think you have not caused enough harm to my Shen family?”

Yu Miao Qi forgot to shed her tears and questioned, “How am I harmful? I am the dignified Di daughter of the Yu manor who was mistakenly taken to be a merchant daughter and separated from my kindred for more than ten years. Do sound out your conscience, who actually is the one who has been harmed?”

Her attitude hardened while Shen Yuan Qi also laughed and spoke coldly, “Back then, it was the Matriarch of Marquis manor who went on a journey hastily. Knowing perfectly well she was about to give birth, she did not bring a wet nurse along. In order to prevent you from starving to death, she asked my Shen family’s wet nurse for a few mouthfuls of milk and it was also Yu family’s servants who took my younger sister away by mistake when they left. My younger sister, who is so lovely and sentimentally righteous, was replaced by something that is ungrateful and heartless like you. What had my Shen family done wrong? If it wasn’t for you, how would my Shen family befallen to such a state of ruin?”

Yu Miao Qi nearly passed out from anger hearing his extreme undesirable verbalization of herself that she wanted to squabble with him but dared not and could only gritted her teeth in silence. The Emperor had merely summoned the Crown Prince, Yu Pin Yan and Shen Yuan Qi to accompany him on his private outing that even a fool could guess the profound meaning amongst this. This elder brother of hers has probably been realized by the Emperor and will soar to great heights in future.

Why troubled herself to oppose him in the first place if she had known this earlier.

Yu Miao Qi’s heart was bursting with remorse. Softening her voice, she said, “Even though the mistake was not caused by the Shen family, you all should have just sent me home as soon as the truth was discovered but instead I was hidden away for more than ten years. No matter who’s right or wrong between the Yu and Shen family, eventually, I am innocent and the biggest victim. Don’t you think so, Elder Brother? Now that I am struggling in the Yu family while you instead pretend not to know me, so just don’t make things difficult for me, which is also considered as paying back what the Shen family owed me for more than ten years.”

Shen Yuan Qi sized her up with amazement and snickered, “Yu Miao Qi, I just realized that you have such thick skin, which is really rare in the world. Paying back what the Shen family owed you? You’ve caused the Shen family to lose the family fortune and prompted my parents to die in vain. What the Shen family owed you had long been paid off. I, Shen Yuan Qi, do not owe you anything.” With these words, he turned around and left.

Yu Miao Qi was really anxious now. She pulled his arm then simultaneously knelt and begged, “Elder Brother, I was wrong. I truly knew my mistakes. Do spare me once considering the decade-long mutual affection of brother-sister. From now on, we will let the bridge return to the bridge while the road reverts back to the road[1] and would it be possible for us to grow old and die without having had any dealings with each other?”

Shen Yuan Qi looked fixedly at her for a long time before he finally compromised, “I can pretend that I don’t know you with one condition, you can’t do anything to Xiang’er. If I am to know that you harm her, I will make sure you lose your reputation and be left with nothing.”

Yu Miao Qi was stunned and tears slowly trickled down from her eyes. This time it was not a pretense but truly from bitterness as the elder brother who utterly spoiled her back then would one day actually say such heartless words to her and for the sake of Yu Xiang whom he had never even met. What’s so good about her that everyone is partial to her?

Forcing down her resentment, Yu Miao Qi wiped her tears and smiled miserably, “Elder Brother thinks too highly of me. How can I be a match for Yu Xiang? You have seen what happened today. No one who offends her has a good end and all the noble ladies in the Capital are afraid of her. How would I dare to go forward to provoke her, instead I am more afraid that she will come after me.”

“If you don’t mess with her, how would she come after you? She is not like you who are wickedly heartless.” Shen Yuan Qi left with a flick of his sleeves.

Yu Miao Qi’s features were distorted beyond recognition as she scratched the ground hard to vent out her hatred. Only when she heard Lin Shi’s call in the midst of a trance did she get up slowly and straighten out her appearance before leisurely walked out.

“He didn’t do anything to you, did he?” Lin Shi stepped forward hastily to pull her and earnestly urged her, “You should not provoke him again in the future. The Emperor only summoned him and Yu Pin Yan to accompany his private outing which evident he has gained favorable treatment of the Emperor. The rumors that were released formerly did not harm him at all. We are just women and no matter how long our hands are, we still can’t reach beyond the royal court. So, let’s just forget it.”

Yu Miao Qi patted the back of her hand to reassure, “I know Mother. I’ve come to an understanding with him. From now on, we will let the bridge return to the bridge while the road reverts back to the road and to grow old and die without having had any dealings with each other. He is a man of his words and agreed not to retaliate against me.”

“That’s good, that’s good.” Lin Shi sighed with relief then immediately said, “Don’t bother with Yu Xiang too. Let’s just forget about it and live our lives well.”

“Why?” Even Lin Shi was not on her side too. Yu Miao Qi spilled out a belly full of hatred.

“You can see how formidable she is. I’m afraid we are not her match. What can we use to fight against her? Old ancestor and Yu Pin Yan protected her like the apple of their eyes but pulled a long face and treated us aloofly when they saw us. She is also a formidable character herself, not mentioning her gimmick scheming but she can censure somebody to death by merely opening her mouth. Based on her firecracker temperament, she could perhaps even impale a hole in the sky while Yu Pin Yan will help her hold it up if she is piqued but who will help us? So, let’s forget it.”

What Lin Shi said was extremely true and Yu Miao Qi knew it clearly yet it further evoked the idea of not admitting defeat, vowing that one day she will trample Yu Xiang under the sole of her feet and grind her to death.
