Yu Xiang distractedly nodded her head. Just when she was about to change the subject, two maidservants with slender figures arrived at the door. Their faces were exquisite made-up, they each carried a package in their hand, they were also swaying their narrow waist as they lowered their body to give their greetings. Their voice was as melodious as a trickle of mountain spring water. “Greetings to the Marquis, Madam had ordered both maidservants to come to serve you.”

The maidservant wearing the aqua-blue shoes smiled delicately. “This maid servant’s name is Chun Mei.”

The maidservant wearing the emerald green shoes took a quick glimpse at Yu Pin Yan and spoke shyly, “This maid servant’s name is Dong Shui.”

Then, they spoke in unison, “Madam has ordered both of us to serve Marquis in washing the face and rinsing the mouth in the morning and evening. In the daytime, we are to serve the Marquis in brush and inkstone. Please instruct us if the Marquis have something that needs attending to.”

Yu Pin Yan raised his eyebrows and remained silent. The redness on Yu Xiang’s face, however, quickly disappeared. She said coldly, “There’s no need for you two to serve here, so go back to wherever you came from.”

Chun Mei and Dong Shui had Lin Shi’s backing and both their hearts held a single thought, to remain at the same spot and not to move. Their expressions were pitiful as they turned their gaze towards the Marquis.  “Responding to Third Young Miss, this is Madam’s orders. This maidservant does not dare to disobey. Moreover, the Marquis doesn’t have a maidservant to attend to by his side, so it’s quite inconvenient for his daily..”

Yu Xiang coldly interrupted both of them, “It is called inconvenient because there is no maidservant to attend to him? Do you think the guards and manservants in the whole courtyard are dead? Did you not hear me telling both of you to get lost? Do I have to order someone to drag you out?”

Yu Pin Yan, who had been silent for a long time, spoke slowly, “Xiang’er, why are you driving them away?”

The two maidservants’ expressions were very surprised, but Yu Xiang looked towards him with a startled gaze. There was a moment of silence. Yu Xiang suddenly threw the brush in her hand to the ground causing the black ink to splatter all over her hands. Then, she tore the rice paper on the table into pieces. She said angrily, “I’m not writing anymore. If you want to keep them, so be it. I’m leaving. Quickly let go of me.” As she spoke, she kept struggling and her eyes gradually became red.

Yu Pin Yan quickly pulled her into his embrace and beckoned towards the two guards standing at the door. The guards stepped forward and dragged out the two maidservants, who hadn’t had time to put their surprised expressions away.

Yu Pin Yan forcefully restrained the mad little tigress in his arms and asked in a deep voice, “What’s this tantrum about? Even if you want to drive them away, you should at least give your Elder Brother a reason.” Tell me that your attachment of me is not childish possessiveness, but a clear-cut affection between a man and a woman.

Reason? What reason could Yu Xiang give? To say that ‘I only have you in my world, and your world will consist of concubines and children. Then, won’t you naturally forget me? Therefore, to keep you to myself and to avoid the foreseeable future, I don’t let anyone near you?’ She knew her thoughts were morbid and could not form them into words, but she would rather crash into the southern wall than turn back[1]

She blinked her eyes in a desperate attempt to hold back her tears that were rapidly pouring out, but she failed. So she just wiped them haphazardly with the back of her hand and said menacingly and resentfully, “There’s no reason! I’m this unreasonable! Let go of me. I don’t want to see you. You always lie to me.”

Yu Pin Yan hesitated whether to directly expose her pedigree or let her attachment to him turn deeper. While he was caught in a dilemma and hesitated between the two choices, he lowered his head to look at her and couldn’t help but laugh. He saw the little girl’s face was not only stained with tears and snot, but there were also the ink stains on her fingers, which made her look very pitiful and comical.

“Laugh, laugh and laugh.” Yu Xiang felt even more aggrieved and indignant. She said accusingly, “All you can see is the smile of your new love, while the old love weeping has gone unheard.[2] You’re an unloyal man.”

What’s all this about? Yu Pin Yan couldn’t hold back any longer and wiped his younger sister’s tears and helped her blow her nose while laughing out loud.  “Silly girl, how is there new love and old love? Elder Brother’s new and old love is just you, only you. Hurry, look. The two maidservants have been driven out by me and they will never be allowed to set food in the front courtyard again.” He grabbed his younger sister’s jaw to make her look towards the door and continued to coax her, “Stop crying. It breaks your Elder Brother’s heart to see you cry. Elder Brother only likes you.”

Teardrops hung on her eyelashes, blurring her vision. Yu Xiang tried her best to widen her eyes. Only when she saw that there was no one at the door, then she slowly stopped sobbing. She wanted to break into a smile but she felt it was too embarrassing. She only pursed her lips and glared at her Elder Brother, whose appearance looked ruthless; but in reality, was weak and soft manner.

Yu Pin Yan held her feline-like face and laughed for a while before ordering Liu Lu to fetch a basin of water and carefully wiped the ink from her face and hands. Deep in the bottom of his heart, he sighed helplessly, Forget it. If I can’t get an answer from asking, I just won’t ask anymore. I really can’t bear to see her teary-eyed expression.

“Little vinegar jar[3], why is your jealousy so great?” Yu Pin Yan scolded softly as he pinched his younger sister’s fair and clear cheeks that were clean again, but the words were filled with satisfaction.

Originally, Yu Xiang didn’t want to bother with him. However, when she looked into his profound gaze, which was filled with tenderness and affection, the corner of her lips curled up unconsciously and she snorted like a cat.

Yu Pin Yan simply loved her coquettish little appearance to death. He couldn’t get enough of it and carried her into his arms for a good massage. A soft kiss like butterfly wings landed on the top of her fragrant hair.

Liu Lu poured water as she stood on the porch feeling very uncomfortable. When she was about to bite the bullet and urge the Young Miss to return, Ma Momo came rushing in and said, “The Old Madam told the Marquis to hurry over. Eldest Young Miss is making a scene.”

“What’s the matter?” Liu Lu hurriedly asked her.

“Sigh, what else could it be? Her marriage!”

Marriage? With the Fang family? No wonder the Eldest Young Miss is making a scene, the Fang family is already destitute and homeless, how can she marry into their family? Liu Lu put the basin away and rushed in to report.

[1] It implies from the idiom 不撞南墙不回头(bù zhuàng nán qiáng bù huí tóu)- The literal meaning would be ‘not turning back until one hit the southern wall’, which means to stubbornly insist on one’s own ideas.
