Names mentioned in this chapter (which can also be found in the glossary):

-虞襄(yú xiāng)- Yu Xiang, the female lead

-虞品言(yú pǐn yán)- Yu Pin Yan, the male lead

-虞妙琪 ( Yu Miao Qi) – the novel original FL and YPY’s biological sister

-沈元奇(Shěn yuán qí)- Shen Yuan Qi, Yu Xiang’s biological elder brother.

-成康帝 (Chéng kāngdì) – Emperor Cheng Kang

-徐院正(xú yuàn zhèng)- Xu Yuan Zheng

Emperor Cheng Kang dismissed all the palace staff away, leaving only his most trusted chamberlain behind. Thereafter, he took out a handkerchief to cover his mouth and coughed. When he finished coughing, he spread it open to see that the bright yellow fabric was stained with crimson blood. It turned out that Emperor Cheng Kang was already gravely ill and his days were numbered, so he made drastic reforms to the imperial government, eliminating the aristocratic families and supported young talents to pave the way for the Crown Prince to ascent to the throne.

This matter was only known to the chamberlain, imperial physician and a few others. Even the Crown Prince and the Empress were kept in the dark. Since the beginning of the Lunar New Year, the Emperor had frequently been handing over his affairs to the Crown Prince, and had even been sharing half of his official documents with him to read. Although the Crown Prince was currently heir to the throne, he already had one foot on the throne.

The man in the shadows probably couldn’t wait.

Emperor Cheng Kang shot a cold gaze at the chamberlain. It made the chamberlain so horrified that he dropped the medicine bottle he had just taken out of his sleeve pocket and knelt down to declare his loyalty.

“Get up, you have grown up with me. I* trust you.” Emperor Cheng Kang muttered to himself irresolutely. “If he did not know about my* condition, the man in the shadows would not have been in such a hurry to use so many secret moves and contacts to set up such a murderous scheme. My fourth, fifth, sixth son… Who on earth has hidden so deeply that even my beloved general and the Crown Prince are embroiled in this scheme.

Emperor Cheng Kang shut his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again, the murderous intent could make people tremble in fear, “Send someone to Xu Yuan Zheng, remember not to alarm him, just keep an eye on him.”

A Dragon Scale Guard suddenly appeared in the hall, but his official robe was not the usual bright red, but a brownish colour. He cupped his hands and received the orders, disappearing the same way he had appeared..

The chamberlain knelt on the ground and kotowed repeatedly. He understood that although Emperor Cheng Kang said he believed him, the Emperor already had an intention to kill him. Those who knew of his condition would probably not live.

  ———————————

The Old Madam spat out a mouthful of blood, but she did not allow Ma Momo to send a physician and shouted, “Go and open the door of Yan’er courtyard. Search all the rooms, especially the study, quickly!”

Her grandson had suffered a defeat. The civil officials would definitely impeach him. However, he was also considered a hero who died for his country. The Emperor would only take up the case and put it down gently for the sake of having three martyrs of the revolution of the Marquis family. At this point, if anyone wants to bring down the Marquis manor, they will certainly fabricate trumped up charges to frame her grandson. Since they are framed, there will certainly be evidence of guilt. Where is this incriminating evidence? And how did it get in?

Connecting Yu Miao Qi’s words, the Old Madam was suddenly enlightened like she was awakened by cheese pouring on the crown of her head.[1]

Yu Pin Yan controlled the Marquis manor as if it was a military camp. Even if there was a shortage of people in the manor, he would never buy them from a middleman. All of the people he used were from those that were born in the manor. If any of the servants had committed a crime and had to be thrown out, they would all be sent out as a family, leaving no room for error. Even if Yu Miao Qi broke the rules when she was in charge of the household, the Marquis manor appeared like it was in a mess. Yet, there were no loopholes for people to exploit. In the case of poisoned dates, it can only be said that Yu Miao Qi’s greed had reached a certain level that even Yu Pin Yan could not control her.

Every time Yu Pin Yan went on an expedition, he would tell the Old Madam to seal his courtyard gate and study. Moreover, he would send someone to check the seals every day, so that if there was anything peculiar, he would immediately investigate thoroughly. In this way, the Marquis manor was controlled like an iron pipe.

The small courtyard where Yu Xiang lived was only a wall away from his study, and a corner door was set up for his convenience and was never locked. Yu Miao Qi told her about her grandchildren and asked her to marry them off as soon as possible.  This resulted in Shen Yuan Qi coming to their manor to acknowledge her as his family member. This subsequently led to her and her granddaughter making a scene in Jingfu courtyard, which alarmed even the guards and the servants.

Where was Yu Miao Qi when everyone was trying to calm down her and her granddaughter? Did she open the corner door and sneak into her grandson’s study?

The more thoughts the Old Madam gave it, the more frightened she became, and she was about to leave her sickbed with her walking stick. However, before she could even leave her room, she heard commotions coming from outside and someone shouted, “Bad news, the Dragon Scale Guards are here to arrest someone! Go and find the Old Madam!”

The Old Madam rushed to the door of her grandson’s study and saw Ao Ping amongst a group of Dragon Scale Guards, coming out of the door while holding a small box full of letters and shouted sternly, “The guilty official, Yu Pin Yan, has collaborated with the Western Barbarians to usurp the throne. Now, the evidence is conclusive! Someone come, arrest everyone!”

The Dragon Scale Guards answered in unison and tied the servants with their hands behind their back and took them away one by one. The Old Madam received an imperial mandate as a first-rank Madame was given some face, so she was escorted to the bullock carriage by two guards with swords against her back. Yu Si Yu and Yu Miao Qi were also escorted over; One had a frantic expression and didn’t know what to do, the other was expressionless, but with a gleam of joy in her eyes—She had finally destroyed the Marquis Yongle manor. How satisfying

  ———–

Even if fate changed, there would always be striking similarities in some areas. In her previous life, Yu Miao Qi was already the Fourth Prince’s Consort, but she still used the same tactics to destroy the Marquis Yongle manor. Merely because Yu Pin Yan had gained power and submitted a petition to Emperor Cheng Kang to bring the Crown Prince, who was guarding the imperial tomb, back to the capital. The Emperor had always loved the Crown Prince and would not have sent him out of the capital if not for the mandate of Heaven. As soon as Yu Pin Yan’s petition was submitted, Emperor Cheng Kang readily agreed.

With Yu Pin Yan’s support, it was only a matter of time before the Crown Prince ascended to the throne. Thus, for the sake of the Fourth Prince’s ambition and her future, Yu Miao Qi finally made a move against the Marquis Yongle manor.

The difference was that in her previous life, Yu Pin Yan died in battle on the western frontier. However, in this life, Yu Pin Yan would return alive.

[1] 醒醐灌顶(tí hú guàn dǐng)- Refined cheese is poured on one’s hand. Buddhism uses this metaphor to instill wisdom, inspire people and wake up completely. It also means that listening to smart opinions makes people very enlightened. It is also described as cool and comfortable.
