Your Kingdom - Arc 2 Chapter 2
The Prince had only gone outside twice. The first time was to have tea in the garden, the second time was only to look around in the library.
–For the time being why don’t we try going to town.
While going around all sorts of stores, you could see if he wanted something, right. And then, it would be nice if you buy him something he wanted then and there…with that line of thought, that very night Fernand promptly suggested the idea to the Prince.
“Prince, would you like to go to the castle town tomorrow?”
Prince Licht Yutaka Maillard raised his petite face with his both hands enveloping a cup of after dinner tea. His beautiful curled black hair danced beside his ear; his inquiring obsidian eyes were turned towards Fernand. His looks were very adorable, although not to the extent of a pretty boy…Fernand was calmly appraising his face. If he smiled twenty percent more often he would be a pretty boy, that’s why Fernand was hellbent on wishing for his smiles.
Fernand loved beautiful things very much. It was perhaps partly because he had been fighting in numerous brutal battlegrounds, or because he had lived for a long time in a palace decorated according to its previous master’s poor taste, his yearning for beauty exceeded other people’s.
He preferred that the one he loved by his side to be a beautiful person. Therefore he was worth spending time and effort…along with that thought, he forcibly repressed the miserable feeling dwelled within himself; he was an unreasonably stubborn young man.
“What are we going to do in the castle town?”
The Prince’s face stiffened a little in alert. Fernand racked his brain to explain to the Prince with a tone as gentle as possible.
“There are a lot of delicious things and unusual things. There should be something you like among them.”
As he whispered in a sweet tone, the little wings on the Prince’s back flapped. This was a sign that he was interested. Fernand was extremely grateful towards those little wings that conveyed more truth about the Prince’s heart than the Prince’s own mouth.
“Um, then I’ll go…Thank you.”
“You are welcome.”
The Prince always thanked people properly. Same thing also happened when Fernand gave him a flower bouquet, and when he gave him sweets. But he was not smiling at those times.
–I don’t need your gratitude, I just want you to smile.
Fernand patted the Prince’s head gently, but he was frustrated. Since the night they both searched for shooting stars, he had not seen the Prince’s smile. The Prince always showed a docile expression, he was constantly a bit absent-minded. Most likely because he had very few chance to interact with people, he had not mastered the ‘smiling out of obligation’ social custom. If anything, it was like he had things to hide from other people.
–I had honestly expressed what I thought until now, but his response was lukewarm.
When the Prince was spending his days in a prison-like room before, his childlike emotions and selfishness were completely suppressed by his wet nurse. If the person himself was not aware, invisible wounds were difficult to heal, and would take a long time.
Fernand just wanted him to be happy, and wanted him to smile…although only insignificant wishes, but it proved to be really difficult to be granted.
The next day after breakfast, the two of them immediately headed out to the castle town.
The Prince wore a sunshade veil that was convenient to guard the wings on his back, the wings themselves were covered with a robe. Sunshine in the summer was very strong, exposing your skin would harm your body. Fernand concluded so when he looked down at the wrists of the Prince who was wearing thin long sleeves.
It wasn’t because he didn’t want to show the Prince’s skin to the people around, Fernand believed he absolutely had not reached such level of possessiveness. He was not such a petty man; he was busy eagerly making excuses in his mind, and at that time something happened.
“Oh boy, it looks hot wearing such long sleeves. How about some cold fruits?”
As if to conceal the blank-faced Prince, Fernand accepted a chilled peach from the middle-aged woman who greeted them from the front of a fruit shop.
“Your little brother is very cute.”
“Thank you very much, a lot of people said so.”
After he made small talk while handing her the money, Fernand held the Prince’s back, urging him to walk forward.
–Little brother, huh?
While also thinking that it was nice enough they didn’t think of them as parent and child, he was a little disappointed that they didn’t look like a pair of lovers going on a date. Because his appearance as the Royal Prince was not known widely in the castle town, he had to deal with greetings like “Eh, you have a little brother?” even when visiting shops he frequently visited.
–we don’t look similar in the first place, though? Our hair colors are different, also our eyes; he is small, white and delicate… he doesn’t look like me at all.
For now, they had gone around several shops without remarkable result, and they decided to visit the usual tea house. As soon as they entered the shop, the owner of the shop greeted them immediately.
“Is there any space in the terrace upstairs?”
“Yes, I can reserve it for you now… by the way Fernand-san, isn’t this one a little too young?”
When the owner of the shop ran his glance fleetingly towards the Prince, Fernand laughed bitterly, “He’s just a delicate one.”
‘That’s good, we look like lovers going on a proper date to the owner.’ Fernand realized slightly.
The shop owner here was like Colonel Brandl, because they knew Fernand’s past lovers, they didn’t only grew used to him, they were also precious people who sometimes give him harsh but honest advice. As expected from a young person running a shop, they had such presence; they stared fixedly at Fernand with a calm manner.
“If you toy with an innocent heart, no matter how noble a position you have, eventually you will receive a severe retaliation.”
“I guess I’m in trouble then, because I’m not toying with him.”
Fernand sighed miserably, then he gazed at the Prince’s side profile. The Prince himself was eagerly peeking at a glass case inside the shop.
“Oh dear, this here… I understand.”
Fernand blushed a little at the shop owner’s teasing smile. Normally, he could pass a teasing like this as a joke, but when he remembered that the one he brought here today was the Prince, the mood wasn’t quite right.
“Then, for the adorable boy, I will prepare an extraordinary cake.”
“No, not a cake, please. Hmm, do you have hot biscuit? Not too hot, a little warm is enough. And please add a bottle of honey. The tea should be boiled lightly, and then please add some sugar cubes….”
The shop owner’s smile grew wider and wider at Fernand, who was reciting detailed orders without pause.
“I see that he’s truly an important person.”
Fernand turned bright red and speechless hearing the shop owner’s words.
