Wolf's Temptation - 18
Uncle Qiao Came Out to See the Werewolf
Xu Bei had to take the little wolf out of the building at night. Chen Xiaoyu always likes to stay by the door reading books, making it very difficult to bypass her. As he tidied up the floor, he thought it over, the little wolf stared at him as it laid down in front of the radiator.
Xu Bei counted. It ate 17 Chinese burgers today and destroyed 11 of them. It also completely destroyed the beautiful impression of Chinese Burgers Xu Bei had held for more than 20 years.
“There isn’t any chocolate, son,” Xu Bei talked to the little wolf as he mopped the floor. The floor was covered in oil. He had to pour some laundry detergent on the mop, “How can I take you out tonight, how about packing you in a suitcase? I’m mostly afraid that you won’t be able to handle turning into a human and whatever condition that was will happen again and then it’ll scare your Uncle Qiao’s fragile nerves into waste… It’s not just me talking, your Uncle Qiao’s nerve is really quite small. A centipede came crawling up a table during class, and he ran bawling all the way to the playground without stopping…”
The little wolf didn’t pay attention to Xu Bei’s words at all. Its eyes kept staring at the mop, its head swiveled around and its hind legs slowly switched from lying down to squatting.
“We’ll crawl out of the back window in a bit, I’ve never tried it before…” Xu Bei walked to the kitchen carrying the mop and when he passed by the little wolf, the little wolf suddenly scuttled over from the ground. He hadn’t seen what was going on clearly when it happened and by then, the little wolf had already bitten down on the mop.
Xu Bei didn’t guard against this move, he didn’t have a firm hold on it and the mop was dragged away by the little wolf. He then watched on as it subsequently issued a low growl from its throat as if it had caught a prey. While using its paws to hold down the mop, it latched on with its teeth and shook its head back and forth. Before too long, the mop head separated from the pole.
Seeing that the first step of its attack was a complete victory, the little wolf felt highly achieved, completely disregarding Xu Bei, who was stiffly standing to the side with a somewhat incredulous look. It lowered its head and took another bite on the mop pole and with only one chomp, the wooden mop pole was snapped in two.
The little wolf flung its head back and half of the wooden pole flew at Xu Bei’s feet. It immediately jumped in place for a bit before twirling around its body, it’s rear sticking high up, it’s head and paws resting on the ground and it stared closely at the halved pole, looking like it was facing off a great adversary.
“I…” Xu Bei moved in an attempt to pick up the wooden stick.
He hadn’t even gotten there before the little wolf had jumped up, and like a white arrow hurtling over, it took the stick away in its mouth and scurried away while knocking a stool over.
“It’s fun, isn’t it! It’s tasty, isn’t it!” Xu Bei looked at it. The little thing’s appearance as it drilled into his clothes, admitting to its wrongs had made him grow quite soft-hearted. He turned his head around like a madman, “Fine, is it tasty, you eat this mop and when you’re done eating, I’ll call you Dad!”
The little wolf looked at Xu Bei with half of the stick in its mouth, staring blankly at Xu Bei, it didn’t seem to understand his words but froze for a second and before once again snapping the stick in its mouth into two parts.
“Ah—” Xu Bei pounced and grabbed the little wolf’s ear, pulling it, “What benefit is there in driving Laozi crazy, ah?”
The wolf was shaken back and forth, but it didn’t mind. It even found the time to lick Xu Bei’s hand.
Ultimately, Xu Bei kicked the little wolf to the door and stood behind it, grabbing the half with the mop head that was left on the ground to finish mopping the floor, and threw the mop that was broken into many pieces by the little wolf into a trash can outside the door. After that, Xu Bei felt that his lower back was nearly broken.
Qiao Qian called to urge him, saying that he had been getting blown on by the cold wind for half an hour in the abandoned agritourism farmhouse: “You really can pick a place, there isn’t a single person here, not even a cat, let alone a guest, not even the boss…”
“That’s right, hold on, I’ll get going at once,” Xu Bei hung up the phone and began to put on clothes, bundling himself up and put a set of clothes in the bag. He turned to look at the little wolf still crouched behind the door, “Son, the moment of truth has arrived… In a bit, we will go down two floors without a sound. We can’t be discovered by Uncle Chen and Xiaoyu. It wouldn’t be any good for me to explain if we’re found, I promised the old man not to keep pet animals at home.”
In the matter of being silent, the little wolf does it rather properly. Xu Bei opened the door and let it walk back and forth on the stairs. It borders on perfection. Such a big build walked on the stairs as quiet as a mouse.
“Very good,” Xu Bei stuck his thumb up and whispered, “Now look at your Dad’s…”
If Xu Bei doesn’t want to make noise on the stairs, forget walking down, or crawling down, it is not highly likely, so he chose a special method, which was the most popular method of going downstairs in elementary school.
He straddled the handrail of the stairs with one leg, then waved at the little wolf, said bon voyage, and slid a floor down from the handrail. The little wolf has probably never seen this image of Xu Bei before. It was quite interesting and looked at him for a long time before it happily followed.
Xu Bei, along with the little wolf, turns out of the alleyway next to the wall on the first floor. When he passed by the old man’s window, he heard Chen Xiaoyu talking to the old man inside: “Brother Xiao Bei does not know how long he can stay this time. Can he stay here for New Year’s… “
“Fuck, going down this handrail feels like it takes a whole year, too fucking rough,” Xu Bei leaned against the wall, wrinkling his brows and bending down, “Smushing Laozi’s balls into mush…”
The wolf was probably feeling suffocated from being trapped at home all day, as soon as it came out, it trotted forward along with the snow pile against the base of the wall. Going through more than a dozen meters, it turned around and walked back, shaking its fur out and stretching out its lower back.
Xu Bei did not take it out of the front door, but chose the complete opposite direction and walked out of Spider Lane, taking an unregistered taxi and making a beeline for the farmhouse by the riverside. He didn’t even ask the driver to take turns left and right. Even if Ban Datong knew that he was in Spider Lane, it was basically impossible to keep watch over him. With so many exits, if he wanted to station a person at each one, Ban Datong would have to expand his recruiting efforts.
When Xu Bei arrived at the farmhouse, Qiao Qian was standing at the door of the farmhouse jumping up and down in place. In the lightless, pitch dark farmhouse, only Qiao Qian’s car was pulled up to a stop, parked solitarily.
“You’ve got some dance moves, ah…” Xu Bei laughed.
“It’s too empty, finding a place like this,” Qiao Qian hopped off the steps and saw the little wolf that followed after Xu Bei, “Fuck me… it’s grown so large, this is a fierce beast, ah…”
The little wolf seemed to understand, it proudly raised its neck, and puffed out a misty cloud of breath.
Qiao Qian attentively stared at it for a while, took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, and handed it to Xu Bei: “So this is what you were talking about? You’re telling me this wolf… is a werewolf?”
“And these are the cigarettes that were being investigated last night?” Xu Bei took a cigarette and glanced.
“Don’t change the subject, answer upfront. I’ve been up all night thinking about you and the werewolf, ah, Wolfman situation,” Qiao Qian pointed to his face. “See, my face is deathly pale.”
“It really is,” Xu Bei lit the cigarette and drew in a breath, “I think that it eating alcohol-filled chocolates turns it into a person…”
“More like you’re talking about yourself, even talking about alcohol-filled chocolates?” Qiao Qian studied Xu Bei’s facial expression. No matter what he said, Xu Bei was able to keep a straight face, he looked for a long time and couldn’t make heads or tails of him.
“It’’s true, do you want to test it?” Xu Bei groped around his pocket, “But you need to mentally prepare yourself… Go buy some chocolate first, they’ve been wiped clean.”
“I have some in the car. Hop on in, there surely isn’t any food out here.”
“You don’t eat chocolate, do you?”
“I bought it when I came here, you would just lose all interest in life without it, wouldn’t you?”
When he got in the car, Qiao Qian occupied himself with locating the chocolates. Although he was feeling a bit skeptical towards Xu Bei’s words, he couldn’t think of a reason why Xu Bei would spend so much effort to lie to him. Besides, they had been together for more than ten years. Xu Bei really had never lied to him before, so he was anxious to validate the genuineness of the statement.
Xu Bei took the chocolate and peeled a piece, holding it out at the little wolf’s mouth: “Son, eat a piece, let your Uncle Qiao open his eyes.”
The little wolf usually eats chocolate like a whirlwind sweeping away wisps of clouds, yet it had a sudden change of temper. Looking back and forth between the chocolate and Qiao Qian, it unexpectedly backed away, shrinking back into the backseat of the car, then stilling.
“What’s the matter?” Xu Bei was a bit baffled, and he moved up to the little wolf, the chocolate was soon held up to the tip of its nose, “Huhu, you take a good whiff, don’t you love eating these?”
The little wolf shrank his neck and lowered his head, not even sparing the chocolate a glance. This unplanned incident left Xu Bei considerably faceless, Qiao Qian watched him with a frown, as if he was looking for what meaning there was to deceiving him through the bone-chilling wind and out into the super cold weather…
“You mean to deliberately make Laozi into a fool, is that it?” Xu Bei fumed and smacked the little wolf’s head. “In all my life, except for that one time I lied to your Uncle Qiao and said that the seams of his pants had split, there hasn’t been another time I’ve lied to him… “
“Don’t randomly bring up something better left in the past,” Qiao Qian sighed. “What are you going to do?”
Xu Bei didn’t answer Qiao Qian. He took the chocolate and nudged it at the little wolf’s nose: “This is your last chance, eat it, or Uncle Qiao will think I’m a mental case and then ask someone to lock me up in a mental hospital, making it so you’ll never see me ever again, I…”
Before he could finish saying this, the little wolf suddenly looked up and swept the chocolate into its mouth, then continued to turn its head to stare at the chocolate box in Qiao Qian’s hand.
“Yo, is it understanding or what,” Qiao Qian was a little shocked, he threw the box of chocolates at Xu Bei, “How much will it take to work?”
“I don’t know. Something happened to it after becoming a human today. It was because of that I gave you a call,” Xu Bei thought about it and didn’t give the little wolf any more chocolate. “Son, just eat one piece.”
No one said anything more inside the car, the little wolf sat quietly in the back seat, Qiao Qian looked at Xu Bei and Xu Bei looked at Qiao Qian, while also looking at the little wolf together, expressions in their eyes intertwined for a heartbeat, and Qiao Qian couldn’t resist pulling a taut face: “Then what? “
“Wait,” Xu Bei’s heart was also unsure, he thought that the little wolf refusing to eat chocolate a second ago was possibly because of the bone pain it had during the day. He grabbed the little wolf’s paw and pulled it beside him, stroking its head, “I say, if it doesn’t change, would you believe me?”
“What are you saying, what kind of relationship do we have, if you say that it eats chocolate and becomes Ultraman, I have to believe it, ah…”
(TN: Japanese superhero. Weebs.)
“If I were to say it could transform into Minmin, would you believe it?”
“I’d believe it,” Qiao Qian smiled. “But I think if Minmin were to be an animal, it couldn’t be a wolf, she’d have to be a lion.”
While the two mindlessly chatted for a bit, the little wolf suddenly stood up in the back seat, its head pushing up against the roof of the car, looking a little uneasy, it circled around in place for several rotations. The space in the car was small and it couldn’t move. Its tail swept across Xu Bei’s face several times. After a few laps, the tip of its nose pressed against the glass of the car window, coming to a complete stop.
“What’s wrong?” Xu Bei patted the little wolf’s back. He actually didn’t know if the little wolf had any tells before it shifted, he’d never seen how it changed. Now as he was seeing the little wolf’s response for the first time, he got a little nervous.
The little wolf didn’t look at him, it simply scratched at the car door with its paw a few times.
“Does it want to go out?” Following after, Qiao Qian also got nervous.
“It’s terribly cold outside, let’s not go out, ah, son,” Xu Bei pulled the little wolf’s tail and tried to drag it back to his side, “You’re wanting to go out now, if you really turn into a person, you’ll freeze to death…”
The wolf’s tail swung and broke free from Xu Bei’s hand with great strength, he proceeded to watch it take a step back, its throat issued a low growl, and then the rest of the matter was thrown out of the realm of Xu Bei and Qiao Qian’s control.
Forget saying realm of control, it is simply beyond the realm of anything they could have imagined.
The wolf arched its back, kicked back its hind legs, and then collided with the car window head-on. Xu Bei’s cry of alarm got lodged in his throat before he had time to think of a suitable means of vocalization, the window was already making a loud shattering sound.
Like a white blur, the little wolf rammed through the car window and fled out.
“Fucking—Hell—” Xu Bei and Qiao Qian simultaneously uttered a cry full of disbelief and anguish.
“What the hell was that!” Qiao Qian watched the little wolf jump out of the splintered window and disappeared between the sheds of the farmhouse, he turned his head and shouted at Xu Bei.
“It’s going to change,” Xu Bei grabbed the bag packed with clothes and opened the door to hop out, “Lang Huhu, you stop right there for Laozi!”
Qiao Qian felt that he had never had such a terrible mental breakdown as he was having today. An Arctic Wolf broke through a car window after eating a piece of chocolate. His best bro madly chased after it with a bag of clothes, and most tragic of all is that he still has to follow along like an overeager dog.
“I’m going to see a psychiatrist!” Qiao Qian said in a hushed shout, unable to think about it too in-depth, and opened the door to chase after Xu Bei.
When Xu Bei got to the back of the shed, he came to a sudden stop. Qiao Qian followed too closely and didn’t stop, running into him. Just about to ask, he heard Xu Bei say: “Why the fuck are you hiding, ah…”
Qiao Qian followed Xu Bei’s line of sight to the left and instantly froze inside and out.
Although Qiao Qian did not personally see the process of the little wolf turning into a human being, on the outskirts in a world of ice and snow, a completely naked man standing in the frigid wind so calm and collected was enough to make his mind fall into disorder.
Qiao Qian was aware that it was a bit impolite to stare at others’ naked bodies, but it seems that the other person does not take offense to his gaze at all and solely looked at Xu Bei.
Xu Bei rushed over to cover him with the bag of clothes: “What is the structure of your fucking brain, is it completely necessary to make such a scene! Put on your clothes!”
Qiao Qian took the opportunity to look this man up and down, but unfortunately, his brain was in too much of a shock to be of any use. After staring for a long time, he only obtained a rough impression. He was very young, a good figure, and his skin was very smooth. Next to Xu Bei’s scar-riddled body, it was pretty much perfection.
“Not cold.” Lang Jiu pulled at the wool sweater Xu Bei forced on him.
“Shut your mouth for Laozi and put on some pants!” Xu Bei threw pants at him.
“He… can speak too…?” Qiao Qian felt that the stiffness of his body spread to his tongue, it was hard to find words to say.
“Do you believe it now?” Xu Bei turned his head and looked at Qiao Qian.
Qiao Qian stared blankly for a long time before slowly spitting out: “Xiao Bei, do you know just how much trouble you find for yourself…”
