Witch Hand Craft ~The Banished Princess Started a Knickknack Shop~ - Prologue 1
It was the first princess, Jill’s seventeenth birthday.
This was supposed to be a day full of blessings, but it began with her mother’s sigh—Queen Bazarde.
「It’s been a month, Jill. 」
「Hai. Okaa-sama is in a good mood. 」
Not only did Princess Jill want to sigh, she even wanted to burst into tears and sobs.
Although Jill had the same distinguishing features as her mother, like her fiery reddish-orange hair and sculpted facial features, she was nothing like her mother when it came to her gentle facial expressions or atmosphere.
Whereas Bazarde’s eyes were full of fierceness and pride, Jill’s eyes tend to look down like a small frightened animal. Some would even think that they were parents and children if they saw them.
「Do I look pretty? 」
Whether she knew it or not, Bazarde muttered sarcasm like she was interacting with a stranger.
Currently, Jill is being summoned to the audience chamber in the castle.
Sitting on the throne was Jill’s father, King Alan, next to him sat Queen Bazarde.
Not the warmest room to welcome their daughter.
Because in this room, the king and queen’s words were not private.
Every word in this room is recorded and the aides move to carry out the king’s words.
This room was not a place to hold a fest, but to conduct politics.
This isn’t a place to entertain anyone, it’s a place that would decide how one would be treated.
「…Have you improved your magic?」
「No, but I haven’t neglected my training.」
「I heard that you had learned a new spell.」
「It’s an extension from the 【Heat】spell. I named it 【Dry】」
A muffled chuckle escaped her lips.
No one stopped her or commented on her behavior from the stern audience.
That was where Jill stood.
The one who was being ridiculed, the one who was being humiliated while having a seat in the royal family.
「How are you going to use it, Jill?」
When everyone heard her sharpened voice, everyone kept their mouths shut.
A heavy silence descended in the chamber, let alone stifled laughs, even breathing could not be heard.
It was hard for Jill to answer.
She couldn’t understand why her mother would pressure her for an answer and failed to grasp her intentions.
Under normal circumstances, they would call it boring and dismiss her.
「…I just thought it might be useful. 」
Bazarde showed her displeasure at Jill’s strained answer.
「Making daily life more convenient isn’t something a witch should be doing. To use magic for such trivial things is a waste, you’re not a commoner, you have the king’s blood in your vein. 」
Jill’s skills excel at household skills like sewing and cooking.
But that would have been trivial and even more offensive to Bazarde. Jill was painfully aware that there were several spells she had invented that she could combine her skills with magic, but they had the opposite effect.
「Why do you use your magic for such nonsense?」
「I hope it will be useful. 」
「Useful? You are making a mistake.」
With a thud, the staff held by Bazarde struck the floor.
This sent shivers up everyone’s spine except the king.
Everyone could feel Bazarde’s wrath.
「With royal blood in your vein, you don’t use magic to be useful. You use your magic to reign and bring your enemies to their knees… no, you use your magic to rule them.」
Bazarde rings the bell.
With that signal, a large armoured helmet was brought in.
「I’ve taught you the most powerful magic in my namesake, 【Scorching Light】. Show me what you’ve got.」
The scorching witch.
That was Queen Bazarde’s nickname.
She’s feared as the ogre who protects our kingdom.
They both have one origin.
Since they’re so frightening that it is impossible to separate them apart without describing their similarities first
Then Jill cast Bazarde’s signature spell.
A single ray of light thinner than a thread shined on the armour from Jill’s straightened fingertip.
Yep, the spell was just lighting it up.
The spot it hit was bright and heated up a bit, but nothing more than that.
It is tough to say what the daughter of the strongest witch is capable of.
Despite her efforts, she was no different from a commoner with a half-hearted grasp of magic.
「You fool! This is how you do it!」
With an angry yell, Bazarde fired a light from her fingertip.
The single ray of light pierced the armour and drilled through the walls between the audience chamber.
The large armour split in half vertically and created a gaping hole in the wall.
The soldier who failed to dodge fell to his knees, but only a few seconds after his left arm did.
The heat was too high for the blood even to flow.
Forget cauterising the wound, it had turned into charcoal.
Everyone in attendance shuddered at Bazarde’s display of magic.
「Calm down, Bazarde. …【Restoration】」
With a single spell from the king, the soldier’s arm quickly re-attached itself to his body and the wound instantly healed.
King Alan’s skills in healing and defense were second to none.
「I apologize for my conduct, King.」
She apologized to King Alan and then turned her cold eyes on Jill again.
「Jill… is that too much to ask?」
I can’t do it.
I can’t kill people and use magic which kills people.
I’m neither prepared nor capable of it.
But Jill couldn’t speak out of her inner thoughts out loud.
Bazarde, on the other hand, had both of those things.
Stronger and even more terrifying than anyone else. In her eyes, I must be worthless and insignificant—Jill had always felt a sense of inferiority and sadness.
「…Maa, there’s nothing we can do about it.」
「This child can’t use magic. It’s like telling fish to breathe on land or cats and dogs to fly. Don’t you think it’s enough?」
Hearing the King’s word, Bazarde pretended to be sad.
But it was an act.
While those around her could be fooled, Jill wasn’t.
She was convinced that this was the reason why her mother was testing her.
「Your niece, Erinna… would be a worthy successor. Her royal blood is strong enough. There shouldn’t be a problem.」
This word caused a storm in the audience chamber.
Between Bazarde and Alan, they have no son. Jill was the first in line for the throne and her blood was the thickest. However, the current problem in the Dylan Magic Kingdom couldn’t be cleared up just by who was born first.
Like magical power.
Bazarde’s magic was stellar. Whether it’s a mighty hero or a legendary dragon, she would burn them down without any discrimination. And Alan’s magic was capable of healing all wounds and diseases. Because of this, the soldiers have great confidence and trust in him, even inexperienced recruits fight as boldly as barbarian warriors. It was through this pair’s formidable magic that the Dylan Magic Kingdom held supremacy over the entire continent of Algenes.
Until 30 years ago, it wasn’t such a large kingdom, but a small, intelligent, peace-loving kingdom. But the previous king took a heavy militaristic policy and the entire climate changed. We entered the war against many countries.
When Alan won, he ruled over many neighbouring countries. Under the previous King’s reign, the kingdom was reckoned as a weakling, but in just two generations, it had become a powerful country that everyone feared. It is no longer acceptable to establish someone as a king if they don’t have the power to maintain their hold on supremacy.
「Then, what about Jill’s engagement…?」
「The Orcus Astral Nation will accept whoever is the next king’s successor. Let Erinna marry him.」
The Orcus Astral Nation had close ties with Dylan.
Since ancient times, it had been a land with deep ties to peace, betrayal and war. In modern times, both royal families have each other’s blood in their veins. Being married to a member of Orcus’ royal family was also another means to deepen the blood of their own royal family.
Bazarde secretly chuckled.
That was what she exactly wanted.
Instead of an inadequate daughter with no magical talent, she loved her own bloodline and the most talented among them.
Especially Erinna, she was Bazarde’s favourite family member and disciple.
「Jill, as of now you are no longer a princess. You should leave. Now.」
