TL Note: The fall semester has started and I’ve got some academic writing workshops to host and run via Google Meet of all places. Expect irregular chapter dumps like this until late November. Sorry ‘bout that.
Though at this rate we’d probably catch up to the raws next month, anyway.
Chapter 24 – To celebrate the founding, from ――
“Well then―― to celebrate the founding of the Exiles Guild, cheers!”
Once the barrel mug in my hand was filled to the brim with beer, I declared the party started.
Before me are Virine, who’s holding her barrel mug in high spirits, and the mildly listless Kagarina.
On the night I and Virine returned to Daytona, we went straight away to Avalon to celebrate the launching of our guild.
Or rather, I pressed Kagarina by telling her “let’s hold a launch party” when she was shutting down the guild’s reception for the day.
Well, it’s a joyous time after all, right?
Regardless of what happened back then, the Exiles Guild is now able to get its guild activities on track.
There is no one in the guild other than us three right now, so it’s pretty much reserved for us.
“Hang on, why do I have to celebrate the launch of your guild with you guys? And knowing that, why am I participating anyway?”
“Well, well, let’s not sweat the small stuff. A celebration is more fun with more people around, right?”
“That’s right, Kagarina-san! Today is the day to commemorate the founding of the glorious Eisen-sama’s guild!”
In contrast to the listless Kagarina, Virine seems to be having so much fun she appears to be completely drunk already.
Ah, by the way, Virine is underaged, so she’s having grape juice instead.
“It’s wonderful… an utopia where those who had been exiled can exert their true power without having to suffer from prejudice… Eisen-sama will illuminate the path of many exiles…. I do believe so…!”
Ecstatically, Virine raised her barrel mug.
…. Seems like she had been really looking forward to it.
Well, I actually do plan to build such a guild, though.
If she’s going to trust me this much, I’ll have to work so I don’t betray her expectation.
I have to rekindle my spirit too, for what’s to come.
“Sigh, it appears that you’ve come a long way now. Before I realised it, you’ve already ensnared such a pure child.”
“Please, ‘ensnared’ is such an ugly word. At least, I’d prefer that you call it what it is. I saw through her hidden talent so I scouted her, that’s it.”
Virine twitched when she heard what I said.
“Scout…… that’s right! Eisen-sama even scouted an exile back in Bium! When will that person join guild!?”
Her eyes are all glittery as she asks me such.
―― The exile that I scouted in Bium that Virine’s talking about is, of course, Maika.
“Well, I just reached out to her then. Whether she ends up joining us or not depends entirely up to her―― though I do believe that she’ll make a decision right away.”
“I’m looking forward to it! That means another exile will be saved! Ah, surely today is a joyous day! No―― ever since I met Eisen-sama, every day has been nothing but joyous for me!”
Virine happily sways as she drinks more of the grape juice inside her barrel mug.
…… That’s weird, I believe there’s no alcohol in her beverage, though.
Could it be that the grape juice is making her drunk?
If that’s the case, she’s probably the type of person who gets rowdy when she drinks in the future.
…… No, let’s not imagine Virine in that kind of situation.
And so, like that our launch party goes into full swing, and then――
“‘Ello thar’, younguns, aren’t we having quite the crowd here? You don’t mind if I join too, do you?”
I heard a man’s voice.
The voice―― was of Kagarina’s father. He’s one of the Quad Masters and the illustrious master of the major guild “Avalon”―― Raidou Kagura.
“Raidou-san! It has been a while!”
“Yeah, a while it has been, indeed. We haven’t seen each other for some time and along the way I see that you’ve become a man. I can tell that Kagarina’s all over you now.”
“Wh, who’s all over him?! Don’t just blurt out careless comments, you shitty dad!”
Kagarina retorted, her cheeks blushing.
I see, I see, so Kagarina has acknowledged me, even for a bit.
Glad to know that.
Raidou took a seat near our table.
“There we, go….. So it appears that you’ve successfully founded your Exiles Guild without any problem. I’m looking forward to witnessing your guild’s feats, y’know? There’s a lot of people who put their expectations on youー more people than you might think, even.”
More people than I might think? Is there anyone else besides everyone that’s currently present here?
Though, just before I ask back—
“But anyway, your guild’s gon’ get into full swing, right? You got any plans to do right away for now?”
“No, in the meantime we’ll just gather some more people, I think……..”
“That so?”, Raidou flashes a bold smile upon hearing my answer.
“Right, it’s important to gather more people, but don’t you think reaching out to the exiles one by one would just take too much time? But if you were to hoist your flag up high and make the Exiles Guild a household name, then they will come on their own. Am I wrong?”
“You’re… not wrong….. but I don’t suppose there’s a simple way to raise our fame….”
“Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that, y’know? ―― You heard about the Aqua Hydra?”
Chapter 25 – A chance of a lifetime
The night of the same day when Eisen visited the head office of the federation in Bium――
“Wh, whaaa!? Have that Eisen kid subdue the Aqua Hydra, you say!?”
Raidou bombarded the translucent crystal with his surprised yell.
The elderly man who was reflected on the stone―― was none other than Gerark.
“Right. I met him at the front of the head office earlier this afternoon. If it’s the people that he discovered, then surely they would be able to take it down.”
“Whoa, hang on a minute, you’re making a bad joke here…..! Eisen has only scouted one exile so far, y’know that?! No matter how talented that exile is――”
“….. I can feel it, the thing people would call ‘heaven’s will’…. He’ll definitely make a magnificent guild master. If my intuition is correct, he will soon take someone else under his wings. Someone extremely talented, too…….”
While Gerark spoke so happily, Gerark held his head in pain.
This isn’t the first time that he received an unreasonable request from the federation’s general representative, but this was the first time Raidou heard something this preposterous.
“Why, if it’s them then I believe there’ll be no problem. It is I who believe it to be so ―― that is all I’ve got to say. Also, I’ll leave the job of backing them up to you, ‘Thunderous Great Wolf’.”
And with that said, Gerark hung up.
“Ah, crap!” Raidou tutted loudly as he no longer saw Gerark’s figure.
When Gerark calls him with his old title, it implies that Gerark is meaning to say ‘please live up to my expectations’―― or to be more precise, there’s pressure in those words.
“Damnit, you sly old fox………. there’s no way this is gonna end well……. ―― But well, intuition-wise, the man has never been wrong before….”
◇ ◇ ◇
“Aqua Hydra……. I do believe I’m familiar with it. Even S-ranked parties would struggle against one of those. I learned from one of the lectures back in the academy that it could even wipe out skilled adventurers. What of it?”
“Well… Imma give it to you straight. Eisen, is your guild up for hunting an Aqua Hydra?”
―― Silence fell on our table.
Virine, Kagarina and I. Each of us grasped the meaning of Raidou-san’s words, took into our brain……… processed them and――
“Ahahahahaha! Oh wow, Raidou-san. I never knew you were into jokes!”
“Oh, Dad, you haven’t had even a drop, but did you get drunk? That’s way too fast, ahahaha!”
“True that~ putting aside everything else, Aqua Hydra is just~. Oh, I’m about to faint~“
The three of us came to the conclusion that it was a drunken joke, and laughed.
“Hahaha! That’s right, it’s a joke so shitty you can’t tell where the joke starts and where the shit ends! ……. But let’s assume that I’m not―― Whatcha gon’ do, Exiles Guild’s master?”
―― Raidou’s eyes were all serious.
When we saw those eyes behind the bandana he’s wearing, our laughter was extinguished in a flash.
“Yo……. you’re joking, right? I’ve just made the guild, there’s no way we could take down something like an Aqua Hydra…..”
“For some unknown reason, an Aqua Hydra has decided to settle down in a low-difficulty cave dungeon a while back. It has been assaulting C and D-ranked parties one after another. Therefore, the federation has issued an urgent subjugation request. The reward is one thousand gold coins, and the one who takes it down first gets to claim it. Now, it might sound impossible, but taking into account that you’re a guild master now, I would like to leave the matter to you.”
Kagarina slammed the table as she rose, her body trembling all over.
“Now hold on there, Dad! Have you finally gone completely mad!? You wanna kill Eisen and the girl?!”
“Oh, not necessarily, y’know? Actually, the Exiles Guild has got this excellent member….”
Raidou moved his gaze to Virine.
And as one would’ve foretold, Virine faints.
Then while maintaining her sitting posture, she fell to the floor with a loud bam.
Poor Virine…….. She couldn’t handle the pressure.
…. I’ll take care of her later…
Raidou-san once again clasped his hands on the top of the table.
“From what I’ve heard, it seems that Volk’s personally-retained S-party is preparing to subdue the Aqua Hydra. I believe they’re called Ae….. something party? Anyway, it’s a ludicrously dangerous request, but if you were to manage to take it down, your guild will be a household name in the industry right away. It’s also your chance to overturn the common perception that people have towards exiles.”
“N, no…… no matter what you say, it’s just plainly impossible…..! I’ve no ability to speak of, and Virine alone is――.”
“Eh, then how about two people? Weird guildmaster-san.”
―― That voice― a girl’s voice, interrupted our conversation.
And there, by the door, a silver tail shook
