Chapter 6 Very Good-Looking
After the employees of the Demon Control Bureau left, Ji Huan’s frame of mind relaxed; feeling that no matter how high the heavens, or how big the earth was, there was no one around that could stop him from doing what he wanted. He leaned back on Feng Chi’s chair. Feng Chi’s habitual lifestyle was very refined and the chair was the same, ie. Boss chair, made of real leather, and when one leaned back, the back was neither hard nor soft; it was very comfortable.
When Feng Chi left, the windows had not been closed. The sunlight from outside streamed in just enough to envelop him (JH). Ji Huan, who was shone on by the sun, lazily squinted his eyes and started to feel drowsy. And it was this moment that he heard the sound of wings flapping from outside. Ji Huan was bewildered before immediately sobering up. He yawned and cautiously raised his head and saw a small sparrow, supporting itself with its legs, extending its head inside and looking around.
From where the small mirror was, the small sparrow’s whole body could be seen. Ji Huan had not reacted when a man with a sturdy stature and fierce features appeared in front of him.
Ji Huan: “……”
This sparrow was a demon!
Ji Huan’s brain turned very quickly, and knew that a demon taking the opportunity to appear here when everyone of the Demon Control Bureau had left, was unmistakingly suspicious. It was as if he (JH) had not thought a second more before stretching his two legs taut and pretended to be dead.
While trying to keep his body rigid, he thought about whether this sparrow had appeared in《Demons Are Running Amuck》or not.
Thinking this, it seems it really had appeared.
As far as he knew, there was a little brother* by the main gong-shou pair’s side that was a sparrow demon.
*not blood-related little brother, it’s more of a male younger than you
Thinking this, the sparrow had already opened its wings and flew inside. The sparrow landed on the desk that Feng Chi used to handle official business. It seemed that it had not yet discovered that on the chair nearby was a mirror. Ji Huan didn’t dare move a muscle. He had suddenly appeared inside the book and the first person he met was Feng Chi so he subconsciously considered Feng Chi to be more reliable than other people.
As for this sparrow, it looked cute but if it really had some connections to the main gong, then to Ji Huan, it was a maggot.
If he was discovered, he would be in danger.
Ji Huan silently closed his eyes and the surface of the small mirror became pitch-black, seemingly appearing to meld with the chair. It was very quiet.
Ji Huan was unable to see what the sparrow was doing but Feng Chi was able to see it clearly. Feng Chi calmly looked at the sparrow in the surveillance cameras without saying a word. Initially he had wanted to see what the small mirror would do in the Demon Control Bureau when it was left alone but didn’t think it would be a buy one get one free. There even was an unexpected “surprise.”
The sparrow jumped around the desk on one leg and used its beak to flip through the documents piled neatly to the side.
However, the demons of the Demon Control Bureau weren’t stupid to the point of leaving important things in the bureau while going out to eat. The sparrow’s beak started to hurt from pecking so much yet, from beginning to end, it didn’t see any useful documents or files. It wrinkled its brows and then once again flew out with a flap of its wings. Outside the window, a tall silhouette indistinctly revealed an arm. Looking at the robust muscles on the arm, Ji Huan who had stealthily opened his eyes to look at the situation, trembled.
He looked down at himself.
Other people’s arms were as strong as iron, his arms were like tender lotus roots.
As his (JH) mouth was twitching, a man’s voice was heard from outside.
“Older brother Zheng*, I’ve already searched. There wasn’t anything useful. Should I continue? Feng Chi and the others should be coming back soon.”
*so again, not really saying that this zheng guy is this guy with steel arm’s blood related brother, calling him older brother b/c this zheng guy is older than him.
The man ambiguously went ‘En’ a few times and glanced back at the office before turning into a sparrow to fly away.
After a while, only after the ‘puchi puchi’ sound of wings flapping had finally disappeared did the small mirror then stand vertically up to exert some strength to jump onto the desk. Ji Huan stretched his neck to look outside the window, the sparrow along with the person had already disappeared, he then released a sigh of relief.
When he relaxed to lay down, he thought about the sparrow’s identity. He heard it say ‘Older brother Zheng’ and in 《Demons Are Running Amuck》, the gong main character was surnamed Zheng, full name was Zheng Yi
Zheng Yi – 郑刈. 郑 – a surname, a state in the Zhou Dynasty. 刈 – cut down, mow.
Did the world have such a coincidence?
Feng Chi looked as the sparrow in the surveillance cameras flew away and the small mirror returned to its original position. His eyes carried a bit of obscurity in them.
When they left the restaurant it was almost 1:30 PM. Zhuo Guang’s two hands individually held the two brothers Shi Jiu and Shi Ying’s head and bowed his head as he cracked jokes. Song ShuJing walked but didn’t forget to pull out her makeup mirror, constantly paying attention to her face. Only Feng Chi’s expression held indifference and emitted a ‘stranger don’t approach’ aura.
After returning to the Demon Control Bureau, Feng Chi directly went to his office. In the blink of an eye, Zhuo Guang heard the sound of the office door being locked and immediately called over the twin brothers. The three gathered in front of Song ShuJing, “Song jie, quickly let us see the surveillance cameras too.”
Just thinking about how earlier Feng Chi smiled from looking at the surveillance cameras, Zhuo Guang’s heart became itchy from curiosity. They had worked together with Feng Chi for almost a thousand years and very much so understood Feng Chi. Feng Chi was indifferent and had great self control, if they were to exaggerate, he basically lived like a walking corpse. The number of things that could interest him were not many, could even be counted as having none at all. Usually, don’t even mention a smile; if even the corners of his lips curved up a tiny bit, it would make them feel extremely flattered.
Let’s look back at the smile from today. Although the curvature wasn’t that big, in the end it was still a smile.
If he wasn’t worried that Feng Chi would kick him up to heaven with one kick, at the moment Zhuo Guang wanted to move over to see what aspect of the demon-revealing mirror was worthy of making Feng Chi smile.
Song ShuJing glanced at the excited Zhuo Guang and slowly fished out the phone from her bag. When Zhuo Guang reached out a hand, she instead withdrew her hand and looked at Zhuo Guang’s eyes. With a fake smile, she said: “You say look and you’ll look?”
Zhuo Guang went ‘Hai*’, “Aiya, I’ll substitute you for one mission! Like our Song jie, this kind of beautiful woman, should enjoy staying at the bureau. Outside cases, I’ll do, I’ll do!”
*sfx for exclamation of regret, here it’s more of like a sigh
Hearing this, only then did Song ShuJing with a satisfied heart, give Zhuo Guang the phone. Yet, she followed behind Zhuo Guang and the four demons squeezed together as they looked at the surveillance cameras.
At first, there was nothing special in the cameras until they saw the small mirror jump around. The expression of the four demons immediately became one of bewilderment and dumbfoundedness.
“What does this mean? This thing can even move by itself?”
“My god, I’ve gained insight. No wonder it was recorded in the antique books, it’s not something ordinary.”
“As expected, it’s a treasure. It even gained spiritual consciousness. My god, it’s actually even a little cute. Is it because I’ve been single for too long? QAQ!”
Shi Jiu pressed his younger brother’s head down, “Be quiet.”
Feeling wronged, Shi Ying went ‘Oh’ and thought that he himself hadn’t said anything wrong. Them two brothers on the surface looked to be only 18 but their actual age when added together had many zeros in it. Unfortunately, he had lived for such a long time yet never had a partner.
So every time Zhuo Guang laughed at how their boss was an old virgin, he had always felt that even he had been shot in the knee.
Shi Ying sighed and wanted to say something when his line of sight was once again attracted to something in the surveillance cameras.
In the surveillance cameras, the scene of a sparrow flying into the office and then flying out again before transforming into a sturdy man appeared. Upon seeing this, the four demons looked at one another in succession. They each had an unsightly expression.
Song Shu hesitated for a few seconds as she looked in the direction the sparrow flew away in and then said: “This sparrow looks somewhat familiar.”
With some misgivings Zhuo Guang said ‘en.’
Song ShuJing: “A few days ago, didn’t I go to the neighboring Lin City? That time, the group leader said that he was entrusted by a friend and hoped that our boss can help to look after* a youngster.
*forgot to make a note of this (it appeared as early as c2) but ‘look after’ in the raw is 带 which can mean belt, band, to carry, etc but it can also mean to look after (but more along the lines of show somebody the ropes, and not really along the lines of babysitting or being a nanny). Hope this clarifies things.
Zhuo Guang: “The official second generation* amongst us demons?”
*an analogy of the chinese phrase 富二代 (rich second generation)
Song ShuJing nodded, “It is this meaning but it was rejected by our boss. At the time, I looked over the documents a bit. I believe that there was a sparrow demon beside that young person and moreover, specialized in low-end pilfering.”
Saying this, the few demons essentially understood.
If that sparrow was really the one that Song ShuJing had said, then taking advantage of when they went out to eat to appear in the Demon Control Bureau is definitely because the official second generation bore a grudge against Feng Chi for not looking after him, so he looked to put Feng Chi to trouble.
Zhuo Guang went ‘pei’ and his face showed disdain, “Is it that our Demon Control Bureau is too low-profile that any demons and ghosts dare to send their heads over to us? In a while, I’ll scatter some millet in the courtyard and create a trap(s). Let’s see how I kill this dogsh*t thing!”
Shi Ying scratched his head, moved closer to Zhuo Guang and in a low voice said: “Older brother Zhuo, at that time, remember to call me over too.”
Zhuo Guang put his arm around his shoulder and grineed: “No problem. But, how come our boss didn’t have any reaction?”
Song ShuJing took back her phone and rolled her eyes, “Boss is well aware of the situation.”
The afternoon of the same day, the Demon Control’s branch office’s group leader in Lin City paid a visit and even brought over Zheng Yi. The other side was a middle aged man that appeared to be mediocre, yet that imposing manner of his made people not dare to show contempt. Guo Sheng was all smiles as he greeted the expressionless Song ShuJing and conveniently let Zheng Yi stay: “Xiao Yi*, have a chat with your seniors.”
Guo Sheng – 郭晟. 郭 – outer city wall, a surname.晟 – bright, prosperous, a surname, has two readings Sheng4 and Cheng2, went with Sheng4 since it’s Cheng2 when used as a surname.
*Xiao Yi – the Yi is the same Yi in Zheng Yi’s name but the Xiao here is 小 if you’ve read other translations you know that it’s a form of endearment/nickname same as when 儿 and 阿 are used, i’m going to italicize when it’s used as a form of endearment/nickname so as to not confuse when other characters of Xiao is used or if a person’s name originally had 小 in it.
With a slight smile on his face, Zheng Yi nodded his head.
To be honest, Zheng Yi, this person, who was the gong main character of 《Demons Are Running Amuck》looked pretty good. No flaws could be picked out from his facial features and he gave people a feeling of being very gentle. Of course whether it’s real gentleness or fake gentleness is something else.
Shi Ying stared at Zheng Yi and rolled his eyes.
Zheng Yi pretended to not see and only gave a slight smile as he gave his greeting, “Hello, seniors.”
Song ShuJing gave a gentle laugh, “I dare not accept this honor, don’t call us this way.”
On the other side, after Guo Sheng walked into the office and closed the door, he started to grumble in a low voice, “I say, Feng Chi, did I provoke your family’s employees? Why is it that the gaze they used to look at me is almost as if they were itching to throw me out of here?”
Feng Chi glanced at him, “You brought over Zheng Yi.”
“Yes, I brought him over.” Saying this, only then did Guo Sheng feel that something was not wrong. This sentence of Feng Chi was not one of doubt but certainty. So, Demon Control Bureau’s group of employees targeted him because he had brought over Zheng Yi?
Guo Sheng felt that it was a little bit unexpected, “It was just bringing him over to let you look. If you really don’t want him then it’s not like I can forcibly shove him to you. Anyhow, the appearance that I kept was already sufficient, otherwise how would Zheng Guan think of me? Am I right?
Zheng Guan – 郑观. 观 – look at, watch, observe, taoist monastery, daoist temple, platform.
Zheng Guan was Zheng Yi’s dad and group leader of the Demon Control Bureau’s branch office in Hai City. Anyhow, he and Zheng Guan were old acquaintances. Even if he couldn’t really help, at least he had to keep up the appearance otherwise it would be nasty looking.
Guo Sheng pulled over a chair to sit down. After thinking about it, he still decided to still put a few good words in, “Zheng Yi, this child, is actually not bad. From what I know, he is very outstanding and is excellent in various aspects. Also, he has a good temper and is not one bit prideful. There are not many young people like him right now, you should grasp this opportunity.”
Feng Chi did not even raise his head, only paying attention to the small black dot in the mirror putting his hands onto his hips and went pei, “Outstanding my *ss, scum! Oh wait, it’s demon scum*!”
*the first scum used is 人渣 and JH says that it’s actually 妖渣 (demon scum) since ZY is actually a demon (妖) and not a person (人).
Feng Chi’s eyes revealed a thread of a smile. Although this small black dot could only live in the mirror, it was sharp-eyed and clear-headed.
So he also said: “No need. If you like, then let him follow you. There’s already enough hands at the Demon Control Bureau.”
Hearing this, Guo Sheng sighed.
In fact, he should’ve already thought of this. Feng Chi had always kept his words. He previously brought up the issue of allowing Zheng Yi into the Demon Control Bureau with Feng Chi two different times, but both times Feng Chi didn’t agree. When this guy starts to become indifferent, he wouldn’t even give his friends some face.
In a whisper, Guo Sheng said, “Alright, but if you start to regret it, you can call me anytime.”
Finished saying the official matter, he didn’t go out. With one leg over the other, he looked left and right around the office and saw the small mirror placed into a stand. The mirror stand was something that Feng Chi conveniently bought from a roadside stall on the way back from the restaurant. It was purely handmade and although the quality of the wood was average, the surface was meticulous and smooth. It was not one bit rough and the color was even nice.
When the mirror was put in, it fit just right.
Although, to Ji Huan, it was as if he was framed onto a punishment rack to receive torture.
Guo Sheng stood up and his hand reached for the small mirror. His fingertips had not even touched the mirror when they were hit by Feng Chi’s fountain pen, “Move.”
Guo Sheng became amused, “Hei. I say, what is wrong with you. It turns out that these years I had made an error in judgement. You’re not indifferent but outwardly cold and passionate inside. Even imitating Song ShuJing to always carry a makeup mirror with you? How about it, do you need older brother, me, to send you a few cosmetics to try?”
Feng Chi’s expresion didn’t change: “I more so wish for you to quickly bring along Zheng Yi to leave Demon Control Bureau.”
“Have no conscience. Quickly tell me, is there or is there not something special about this mirror. Actually making you treasure it so much that you put it on the desk and won’t allow anyone to touch it.
If Guo Sheng, this person, was not given a satisfactory answer then he could bother someone for half a year. Feng Chi knew his disposition. He put down the fountain pen and lazily laid against the chair. His tone was flat and one couldn’t hear anything peculiar about it.
He said, “Very good-looking.”
The author has something to say:
Ji Huan touched his face: It looks like I won over the Boss using my beauty.
