The Orphan Ger Who Purchased A Husband - 9
The sun was already high in the sky, when Shen-Ping left his house and locked the door behind him. He went towards the head of the village where he had agreed to meet with some of the married women and gers of the village. The elders told him that they would send the youngsters in their family to help him get what he needed.
When he reached a group of women and ger were all dressed in high-quality clothing and had jewelry of all designs on their persons. They all had on the makeup of different variations, each suiting to the wearer very well, bringing out their beauty and hiding their flaws. Shen-Ping looked at them and then at himself and felt a bit bizarre. He guessed it was understandable that a man would feel threatened to marry him; after all, he looked nothing like he was supposed to.
He walked over and greeted the group of people. The leader of the group was the daughter-in-law of the aunt that had helped him out. She was just as friendly as her mother reaching out to take his arm was and pulling him close to her as she began to talk. At the head of the village, they all got on the carriages that were lined up and continued their chat.
Time passed and they had reached the town. The woman let the group split into teams of three, and each group had the responsibility to retrieve certain necessities. While the leader took Shen-Ping and went towards the same road that he had walked with Ting-Guang a few days ago. Instead of going to the same store, they went into the largest one and Shen-Ping was almost blinded by the bright colors that lit up the shop.
The woman pulled him to the main counter and smiled at the ma’am in charge.
She greeted politely, “Ma’am Liu, how do you do?”
The older woman looked them over and a smile came to her face “Well if it isn’t Lan’er, I haven’t seen you in a while, what brought you to my shop this time?”
The woman, who was named Lan’er, smiled gently at the aunt “Well. I came with my friend in order to buy something very important. Tomorrow will be one of the happiest events of his life but since it was the last minute, we are not able to make his wedding gown. As such I would like to see the wedding gowns you have, the higher valued ones we can afford it.”
The woman looked at Shen-Ping and nodded “Child if it weren’t for the veil on your face I couldn’t guess you were a ger. Even though you are quite handsome, the wedding gowns I have for gers would not suit you. Moreover, by the looks of you, your husband should be taller and a little more built. However, do not worry. I have just the thing for you. Follow this aunt.”
Shen-Ping nodded and followed them behind the counter and through a doorway. They walked into a large room and he watched as the woman entered a cubicle and pulled out two wedding gowns with the help of the assistant, whom he had not noticed before. They laid down a set of furs and then placed the gowns down and spread them out.
He looked at the gowns and could not help raising his brows. The gowns were plain. They were not as sparkly and filled with designs as normal wedding gowns, but something about the gowns made you feel that if they were like that they would only look ugly. He stepped forward and touched the gown with the cape attached and knew that this one was for him, he rubbed the material and a smile came to his face. It was perfect.
He looked over the other one and imagined Ting-Guang wearing it. The sight made him blush slightly; he looked up at the ma’am and nodded causing her to smile.
“Thank god, I didn’t think anyone would take them and was worrying what I would have to do with them.” Shen-Ping looked at her curiously and she explained, “They were ordered by a man that came a few months ago, he only paid half but after all this time he hadn’t returned. I feel the cloth would rot before he did, and that’s not a very good thing.”
The ma’am sighed, touched her chest before she took the gowns, and packed them up. Shen-Ping paid and then left. Lan’er pulled him into a jewelry store across from the shop and took out the two wedding gowns showing them to the manager. “I would like to see, the accessories suited for these wedding gowns and also your finest crowns.”
It was not long before they were led into a private room and the accessories were brought to them. Lan’er sent the people out and pulled off Shen-Ping’s veil. She started comparing the accessories to him and sighed as she did. “All of these seem a bit too much! They must have thought the gowns were too plain and brought these types of jewelry. Put back your veil, I’ll be right back.”
Shen-Ping pulled on his veil and watched Lan’er as she left the room. A few minutes later, the jewelry in front of him was replaced with exquisite but not overly done jewelry. Lan’er helped him to pick out the ones suited to him and Ting-Guang and finally pulled out a crown. The shop workers came back and helped to pack everything up before they paid and left.
As they walked down the road going to where the carriages were he stopped for a second before he continued to walk. It seems that someone was following them, he frowned but kept the relaxed pace he had as he wondered who in their right mind would steal things clearly meant for a wedding. When they reached the carriages, the other women and gers were there.
Lan’er checked through the things they brought and when she was satisfied they were all packed into the carriages. Then, everyone got on. Shen-Ping frown when he felt the person had stopped watching him, he glanced back to see the person’s rushed disappearing figure and sighed. It would seem they attracted the attention of a thief scout, and as such, thieves might ambush them on their way home.
When the carriage pulled off he sent the message to the others in his group, but to his surprise, they did not panic. Instead, they all reached under the chairs of the carriage and pulled out arrows and bows. The men that drove the carriages pulled out swords. and Shen-Ping became dumbfounded. Lan’er looked at him and smiled gently.
“We were born on a land of gold, do you think this is the first time someone has tried to rob the people of our village? Because we were constantly targeted, especially the weak children, causing great losses to the villages, the people of our village have been thought how to defend ourselves. We wouldn’t say that we could go into war but we can keep our lives.”
Shen-Ping nodded and the woman giggled, “If it were another time you would need to fight too, but since your wedding is tomorrow, you cannot engage in fighting. Be sure to stay in the carriage and do not lookout. You don’t need to worry about us, we may look like this but we can handle ourselves.”
The carriages continued on forward, when they had traveled for a while and had reached halfway to the village the carriages came to a stop.
“Exit the carriages and hand over all your valuables! You can all go when we get what we want.” A voice that would make anyone disgusted, sounded out each word. Without hesitation, everyone but Shen-Ping left the carriages. Shen-Ping stayed still and tried to listen to what was going on.
The voice sounded again and Shen-Ping frowned deeply as he listened, “There was one more of you! I heard he was wearing a veil. Why hasn’t he come down?”
A gentle laugh sounded out, Lan’er replied, “Well, tomorrow is my brother’s wedding, and as such he is not allowed to witness bloodshed. So, he will be staying in the carriage.”
“Oh is that so, then we’ll just take him along with the carriages, he’ll just have to miss his wedding wouldn’t he?” The man laughed lecherously after he finished speaking. “Taking unmarried gers for myself has always been a favorite pastime of mine, and even though he’s a bit muscled, it’s good to have a change of taste once in a while.”
“Shut your dog mouth!”
The sound of Lan’ers rage-filled voice echoed out before Shen-Ping could hear the sound of fighting. Shen-Ping held his hands in a tight fist as he listened. Oh, how he wanted to go out and fight, but he decided to listen to Lan’er and wait. Even though the original was a very skilled hunter, he had never actually gotten into a fight with another person and the same went for himself. He might just end up making the situation worse.
