The Horror Movie Male Lead's Winter - Chapter 10
Chapter 10: The past
Afraid of disturbing Guan Ling’s rest, Zhao Qinqin left soon after talking about their work arrangements. But halfway through, she remembered that Guan Ling’s medical insurance card was still inside her bag so she returned back to the hospital again.
It was almost noon at the moment. Zhao Qinqin had just gotten out after parking her car when she ran into Xiao Cheng in the parking lot. He had come to the hospital to deliver lunch to Guan Ling.
Xiao Cheng had promised Guan Ling that he’d go back home and rest but how could he actually sleep peacefully? As soon as Xiao Cheng got home, he began to wash the rice and vegetables. After he simmered the porridge, he lay on the sofa for an hour or two, and then left for the hospital again.
When he saw Zhao Qinqin, he went forward to greet her and asked, “Did you come to visit Guan Ling?”
“I’ve already seen him. I just forgot to return his medical insurance card back to him. Since you’re here, I won’t need to go up. You can give it to him.” Zhao Qinqin’s attitude toward Xiao Cheng was still rather cold. After all, she could say that she and Guan Ling were already more than just work partners. They were like family who supported each other unconditionally. As for Xiao Cheng, whether intentionally or unintentionally, it was a fact that he had hurt Guan Ling.
“Okay.” Xiao Cheng took the medical insurance card and the medical record from Zhao Qinqin and roughly skimmed over it. There were a lot more pages than what he remembered in there. Xiao Cheng checked the time on his phone and then asked a little hesitantly, “Ms. Zhao Qinqin, would it be alright if I took some of your time now? Can we find a place to talk?”
When Zhao Qinqin had first become Guan Ling’s agent, she was familiar with Xiao Cheng so he had never stood on ceremony when talking to her. But now, he understood the reason why Zhao Qinqin was dissatisfied with him. He also knew that Zhao Qinqin treated Guan Ling well. In the future, there would still be many instances when Guan Ling would especially need her support so Xiao Cheng’s attitude towards Qinqin became increasingly respectful.
However, Zhao Qinqin was unaccustomed to this. She frowned and said, “Come on, you should still call me Qinqin like before. The way you called me now made me feel ten years older.”
“In that case, Qinqin, should we find a place to sit?”
Only then did Zhao Qinqin nod. That time when Guan Ling hurriedly left, Xiao Cheng had called Zhao Qinqin once. However, she didn’t know about the course of Guan Ling’s travel so they didn’t talk for long. Now that they met, Zhao Qinqin knew that Xiao Cheng must have many matters to ask her about.
They didn’t go too far and found a café near the hospital.
In the past few years, the events that happened in Guan Ling’s life were not that overwhelming, but his life hadn’t been that peaceful either. Xiao Cheng still needed to go to the hospital to deliver Guan Ling’s meal so they couldn’t talk for long. Their conversation went straight to the medical situation and he learned about Guan Ling’s physical condition.
It wasn’t unusual to get hurt during filming. A cold or fever was naturally inevitable. What Xiao Cheng cared about the most was the time when Guan Ling got hospitalized.
“It was gastrointestinal bleeding. You know how it is in this line of business. Actors can’t eat on time when they are filming, hence they develop stomach problems over time.” Zhao Qinqin pointed to the page on the medical record. “Guan Ling needed money so he had always worked hard when filming all these years. This is also why Director Chen values him so much. At that time, he felt like his stomach was upset, but he didn’t pay it any mind. After staying up late and filming for two consecutive nights, he immediately vomited blood. The crew was terrified and he was sent to the hospital that very night. After he got examined, that’s when we found out that it was gastrointestinal bleeding. It was pretty serious so he got hospitalized immediately. The assistant called me at that time, sobbing inconsolably.”
“Why……didn’t any of you let me know?” Xiao Cheng couldn’t tell what he was feeling right now. The past few days, he had been distressed and drowning in regret to the point that he was almost numb from the pain. However, now it seemed as if the countless emotions that he had buried deep inside his heart were about to surge up violently.
“Guan Ling wouldn’t let us tell you. If you want to know why, he said that your company was busy with a very important project at that time, and so he didn’t want to distract you. Did you know? Guan Ling was even reluctant to ask for a care worker at that time because he wanted to leave all the money for your company. The assistant and I could only take turns taking care of him during the day, but he was all alone at night. One night, his stomach ached so much that he didn’t even have the strength to ring the bell. It was the care worker for the other patient in the room who found him and called for the doctor.”
Xiao Cheng carefully checked the time listed on the medical record. He recalled that his company had indeed received a small project to develop then. During that period of time, the company could hardly pay the employees’ salary. The company’s R&D department had reached a bottleneck and all the employees’ morale was at an all time low. They proceeded with the project so that they could regain their confidence. In the end, they really completed the project and it alleviated the company’s immediate needs. But Xiao Cheng never thought that the price of that success was losing the time he should’ve accompanied Guan Ling when he was ill. He had left his favorite person to suffer through all the pain alone.
Seeing Xiao Cheng’s expression, Zhao Qinqin didn’t have the heart to say anymore. She only told Xiao Cheng about the new film before she left. “This is a really good opportunity and it’s a suitable role for him. He probably saw that both of your feelings finally warmed up with great difficulty after so long, so he’s unwilling to leave now. You…… if you can, please persuade him.”
“Alright. When is the deadline to join the group?” asked Xiao Cheng earnestly.
“I asked about it. Guan Ling’s first scene is scheduled on Friday. But he’s never shot this kind of film before, so it’s best if he joins the crew with several of the protagonists on Monday. It would be better if he could get a feel for it in advance.”
After hearing this, Xiao Cheng nodded. “I understand. I will persuade him to join the crew early.”
Not long after Xiao Cheng returned to Guan Ling’s ward, the test results came out. It was finally confirmed that Guan Ling wasn’t infected with the Dengue Virus. Another bottle of saline solution was hung in the ward in the afternoon. After it was confirmed that there were no signs of the fever recurring, Xiao Cheng handled the discharge procedures and took Guan Ling home.
When they got home, Guan Ling immediately urged Xiao Cheng to take a rest. However, Xiao Cheng took a seat on the couch instead. He beckoned to Guan Ling. “Little Apple, come here. Let’s talk.”
