「Don’t worry about it! Rather than that child having the red dragon egg stored away as a treasure, it is better for me to take it from him and use it.」
Furthermore, his grandpa said something ridiculous like that without hesitation.
No, it wasn’t about using it, but taking the emperor’s present was a different matter……
Moreover, calling the emperor a “child” was bad enough that he could be arrested for such disrespect if he was not careful.
……..but grandpa didn’t seem to care about it at all.
Then, maybe I shouldn’t worry about it either.
He didn’t want to become bald from worrying about it too much.
「Grandfather, will use this?」
「Hm, as a gift for Mateo」
「……Ehhhhh!?」
After three seconds had passed, he said in a surprised voice.
「My, my present?」
「Hm, right」
「Why?」
「Why don’t you use it? There’s no better way to use it other than to give it as a present for Mateo, are you happy?」
「Huh, Hm…… yes?」
He was so surprised and didn’t know how to react, so he dumbfoundedly nodded and answered.
「Take care and keep it until it hatches」
「Until it hatches…… Ah!」
He was stunned.
He recalled his knowledge about Red Dragons – or rather, dragons in general.
「If I’m not mistaken, when the baby hatched from the egg, they think that the first person they see is their parent.」
「It’s like that」
Grandpa grinned, raising the corners of his mouth into a proud smile.
「If Matteo holds it until it hatches, the hatched Red Dragon will think that Matteo is its parent. The Red Dragon will grow up with you and will be your best friend.」
He started to understand a lot of things.
He read about it in a book that raising a dog when the child was born and letting them grow up together was good for their emotional bond.
Making them a suitable playing partner for a child.
It would let the child understand better, even if they were still young.
To teach the child about the value of life and death, right?
Just like that, Grandpa was doing the same to him with a dragon.
「I see……」
「Think about it, isn’t it a waste to give it to that child? As an emperor, he’s surrounded by as many followers as he wants.」
He came to understand his grandpa’s intention now. However, he should still use his words carefully, he gave a bitter smile.
He snapped out of it and expressed his gratitude to his grandpa.
「Thank you, grandfather」
「Really? I’m glad that you’re happy」
「What should I do with this egg? Should I just hold onto it like a bird’s egg and warm it up?」
He searched through his knowledge from the books he read, but there was nothing about it.
As he had thought, he didn’t know how to hatch a dragon’s egg.
「You don’t need to do that. In fact, there’s no need for you to watch it at all」
「Is that so?」
「Hmm. I had the court magicians examine it. They said it should hatch in seven days based on the magic it emitted.」
「How did they know that?」
「Dragons have a strong magical power. In human terms, one would be able to hear the sound of an unborn child’s heartbeat.」
「Hee~, there’s such a thing?」
That was interesting to know
If that was the case, where should he store the eggs carefully for six days? For the time being?
But still……..a Red Dragon egg.
He somehow approached the egg.
「Ahh~~」
The guards guarding it responded.
Should he stop or continue– he didn’t know what to do, so he looked at his grandpa with a questioning look.
「I don’t mind. It’s Mateo’s present. Do as you like.」
Grandpa said. The guards who blocked him felt relieved and didn’t stop him anymore.
He understood that feeling of not being given orders.
They felt relieved when they received permission from the person with higher authority once again.
When working, that was often the case.
Thinking like that, he somehow touched the egg.
He was curious about the “heartbeat” metaphor his grandpa had mentioned.
So he touched it, and of course, he couldn’t detect any heartbeat.
Instead, the egg shone.
「Eh?」
「Wa, what?」
He became flustered, surprising his grandpa.
During that time, the light became brighter and brighter.
He tried to retract his hands– but.
His hands couldn’t be separated from the egg’s shell.
「Are you okay, Mateo!?」
「U, un, I can’t remove my hands from it.」
「What did you say!? Hey! Break the egg」
After thinking for less than a second, Grandpa gave the order to the guards at his side.
He was surprised.
「Ehhh!? Wait a minute, grandfather, this is a precious egg, right?」
「Don’t worry about it, Matteo’s safety is more important!」
Grandpa said decisively.
「Do it!」
「Hah!」
Encouraged by the lack of hesitation from the person above them– his grandpa–the guards all held their spears at the same time.
Just like that, they simultaneously stabbed the egg.
However, the tips of the spears did not even get to make contact with the egg.
The light became an invisible barrier, shielding it from everyone’s spears.
The guards shouted, “Ei~!” “Ya~!” as they tried to stab the egg several times, but there was no sign of any of their attacks reaching the egg.
「Mmm. Give that to me.」
Grandpa snatched a spear from one of the guards and prepared to break the egg himself.
The next moment, the situation changed again.
Until then, only the egg was glowing.
Now his own body started to glow too.
「Mateo!?」
Grandpa was surprised.
「Are you okay, Mateo!?」
「U, un. I’m…… particularly fine」
[TL: (とくに……なんでもない) とくに – tokuni means particular/specially. なんでもない – nandemonai means nothing and can be used as I’m fine depending on the situation.]
He looked at his hand.
He then stared at the hand that wasn’t stuck on the egg.
It was glowing, but it didn’t do anything particular.
It was not only his hands – his body too – was glowing.
Gradually, the light moved from his body towards the egg.
As if it was being absorbed by it.
–Doggun.
「Eh?」
「What happened!?」
「Just now, there was a sound」
「Sound?」
–Doggun.
「I heard it again–the sound of a heartbeat?」
He mumbled and looked at the egg.
Sound of heartbeats could be heard after the light was fully absorbed.
He calmed down and listened clearly.
Then, he realized that the sound was coming through his hands and not his ears.
It was a strange feeling.
It was difficult to explain how it worked, but he could hear it clearly through the palm of his hand.
He was sure of it
The next moment, the eggs shone with a pa–.
The light that was glowing faintly, suddenly scattered explosively.
「Kuuu!」
He used his other hand that wasn’t stuck to cover his eyes and turned his face away.
「Mateo!!」
While listening to his grandpa’s screams, the light gradually subsided.
Eventually, the light completely receded –immediately after that, something pounced at him.
「Mi-yu~!」
He got a tackle-like jump falling backward, he ended on his back, and there, on his stomach, was the one that tackled him.
And then–it licked his face!
「Mi-yu~, Mi-yu~!」
When he opened his eyes, he saw a small creature perched on top of him, licking him on the face.
This was how his encounter with the legendary Red Dragon came to be.
