Arc 1 Volume 1 – The World of Chaos
“It’s goblin, right?”
I huddled inside the counter, panicked one more time.
What should I do! What should I do! What should I do!
I pressed the emergency button under the table again and again. Even though I knew it meant nothing, I continued to press it.
My mind is spinned out of control, and I can’t think of anything. When I look outside, they must be headed for this store. There are about five green ones. I was too nervous to move because I just hid behind the counter and stared at them. Finally, they arrived at the store entrance.
The goblins, who had been waiting at the door for a while, opened it with their hands without breaking.
The sound of chimes announced the store entrance echoed throughout the bright store. The green ones were taken aback for a moment, but they quickly entered the store and started tearing up.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no!
Stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it!
I sat down to hide under the counter and held my head in my hands. The crashing sounds ruthlessly told me how they ransacked the store. Every time I heard a loud sound, my body reacted with a jolt.
Scary, scary, scary!
What will happen to me if they find me?
Will they kill me? Of course, I will be killed. How will they kill me? Of course, they would beat me to death. Is it enough to kill? I might get assaulted. Will it hurt? I don’t want to be in pain. I don’t want to be scared! I hate it! No!
The sound was so loud for a moment, but then stopped and became silent.
One minute, two minutes, or… ten minutes? I no longer could sense the passing of time. I wonder how long the silence lasts. I don’t know why it was so quiet.
I looked up a little, put my hands on the counter, lifted my knees a little, and peeked from the counter. Right in front of me was the face of a goblin staring at me, just like me.
Our eyes meet!
“Kyaaaah!” I fell backwards and crashed into the cigarette display rack behind the checkout counter.
But I don’t care about the pain! I have to run! Now!
I ran into the back room and was surprised to see the door leading to the store. There is another entrance to the back room. The door has no lock so it can be easily opened to enter and exit the store.
“There is nowhere to escape!” I curled up again, holding my head.
“No… it’s over.” I crawled under the desk in the back room, crouched down, crying and shaking.
“Ugh… Hick, Hick.”
After a while, they didn’t attack. They haven’t come so far. I can’t think why or how else. I just curled up under the desk and cried. Finally, it became dark outside and I learned that that night would come to this world too.
Rubbing my swollen eyes, I crawled out from under the desk and stood up. Just a moment ago, I heard the store doorbell ringing. I thought they were gone. I haven’t checked it out yet, but I think so. I returned to the counter and looked around the store, and it seemed they had left. The store’s interior was in a state of disrepair.
Foods such as lunchboxes, rice balls, and bread were eaten away, the shelves were flipped over, and bottles of alcohol were broken, giving off the smell of alcohol.
The alcohol bottle is broken and smells of alcohol. The PET drink bottle was torn from the middle, as they didn’t know how to open it. Most of the books and magazines are also torn apart. But somehow the contents of the hot case on the counter are still safe and in the same condition as yesterday.
Looking outside, it was pitch black. Nearly half of the store’s walls are made of glass, so it’s easy to see on the outside. In other words, the entire store can be seen from the outside.
I was scared because I felt someone was peeking out of the darkness. I wondered why there weren’t any shutters at the convenience store.
Oh right, The door has a lock! I hurriedly went to lock the door and ran back to the counter. I know that locking glass doors is useless. But I can’t help but do it.
When I returned to the counter, there was a bang at the glass door. I looked up and saw a man in armor banging on the door. His face was not covered by the armor, so I could tell he was indeed a human.
I was horrified. I just went to lock the door a moment ago. I got goosebumps when I thought that if I was late by a few seconds later, I would meet the man at the door. It was pitch black outside with no street lights, and I couldn’t even notice anyone.
“You there! Are you okay? Open up!”
A man with a face that looked like a Westerner no matter how you look at it, was shouting in Japanese.
That’s so unnatural.
I could never think of such ideas as ‘Because this is Japan’ or ‘This man is just fluent in Japanese’.
Why, because the words spoken and the movements of the mouth clearly didn’t match. I felt as if I was watching a Japanese version of the dubbed foreign film live, and the discomfort made me think that someone was playing with me.
I don’t know if it’s the world’s system, God, or anyone else, but I feel like the correct translation and the fact that the shop has electricity is all set up to advance a game. –That’s how the settings go.
The man is still knocking on the door.
“What is this building? Open up!”
I don’t have the strength to fight. Goblins or humans, if they attack me, it’s all over. There is no guarantee that this person is a good person.
I will never open it. I won’t open it. As my mind was full with that thinking,
With a loud bang, the door glass shattered.
What is he doing?
“Don’t break the door!” I screamed.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” He broke the glass and now walks in! He has a sword!
Calm down, me!
Unlike the goblins, he could speak the language. I’ll figure something out!
“I saw goblins leaving this building. Don’t worry, we killed them.”
“Did you get attacked? Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
I stay alert.
This person wasn’t a goblin, but a person who could speak. But he’s a man. I am alone with a man, and I don’t know when he will assault me.
“What a mess, was this done by the goblin? By the way, what is this building?”
“This is…. a store”
“A store? I see, certainly those things that look like merchandise are strewn about.”
“You can take whatever you want, but please leave now.”
“That’s fine, but what are you doing here? Are you alone? And you dress so strangely.”
Strange? This is this store’s uniform.
What would happen if I answered honestly here? Will the chances of the man assaulting me increase? But even if I answer that there are others, there is no way to prove it. It’s a small store, and if he checked, he’d find out right away.
What should I do? What should I do?
“Oh, you look worried about something, but don’t worry, I’m not going to assault you.
“Eh?” It was as if he had read my mind.
“You don’t recognize this armor? I am a Royal Knight. And here.”
The man tapped air against the counter.
“Looks like I can’t enter from here.”
“Eh?” I traced my hand around the top of the counter. Of course there was nothing there.
“That’s weird. Oh, well, that seems like it’s your barrier, so it doesn’t apply to you.”
He knocked again in the air. There was even a knocking sound. Certainly it seems like there is something in the air. So that’s how it was.
This was precisely why the goblins didn’t come over here. I really was saved by this thing… I started crying again because of the relief and fear at that time.
“Hey, hey, are you okay?”
“Ugh, hicks. I was so scared.”
“Well, you almost got attacked. As I said before, I am a member of the Royal Knights. I was just on patrol. I have a horse tied outside. I can take you in for protection if you like. What do you say? The royal capital is just a stone’s throw away1.”
My mind was at loss, and honestly a bit tempted. The town seems near. But is it okay to leave here? Of course, I want to be protected. But I’m afraid that if I leave this place, my connection with the original world will be cut off as well.
I don’t feel like I can live in a town in a different world. However, I also don’t have the confidence to stay in this store and survive.
But electricity and water are still intact, and I also feel that my life line is protected. As for food, there is still a lot of stock for FF (fast food) and other things in the back room, so I should be fine for a while.
Besides, if I stay here, maybe tomorrow I will return to my original world again. Discovering the existence of this barrier brought my wavering heart to this decision.
As long as I have this, my safety is guaranteed, right?
“I’m going to stay in this store for a while. So, um, would you mind coming every once in a while to check on me?”
“That’s fine. This is my regular patrol course. Today I was surprised to see this building suddenly. Do you live here?”
Maybe the Royal Knights are like the police I know. They always seem to be on patrol.
“I will stay here for a while.”
“I see. I understand. Then I’ll come here every day to inspect the store. Just don’t deactivate the barrier.”
“Yes, sir. Thank you very much.”
Even if you ask me to not deactivate the barrier, like I know how to do that.
I asked this person to help me investigate the range of the shop barrier. It seemed the counter and back room were within the barrier range. The barrier appeared to be running along the store wall, forming a L-shape. I’m afraid the toilet is out of that range.
Maybe this knight is a good person to help me with all this, I thought. I apologize in my heart for thinking of him the same as those beasts and goblins.
“I’ll come back tomorrow. Don’t die. And… I’m sorry for the door.”
“No, it’s okay… Come to have a look tomorrow.”
The royal knight left on his horse.
He told me not to die.
–He said like it’s not a big deal.
Are these words that come out as commonplace in this world?
In my world I originally was in, I don’t know if such words will ever be exchanged even once in a lifetime. This is not a movie or a novel.
Is this really reality? If it’s a dream, I hope I wake up soon.
In the morning, I may return to my original world. Is there no hope left for that? Outside the broken glass door, there was darkness. It was pitch black darkness that engulfed everything. No matter how much I stare at it, the darkness will never return to the original scene of the town.
I am alone in a store which is too quiet. Before I knew it, I cried again. I stood still, crying silently. This is a different world.
It’s a world where death is right next door.
