Later, He Became a Top-Notch Drag Queen - 1
Cao Wei left one of his sandals at his doorsteps as he frantically left his apartment.
It took around half an hour before he reached the hospital. After inquiring the nurse at the first-level lobby, Cao Wei immediately ran towards the emergency room. When he heard that they were performing a resuscitate, his heart skipped a few beats. Although Qian Lu had vaguely mentioned it through the phone call, he did not expect things to be so serious.
There were people waiting outside the emergency room – there was a lady with long hair and fair-skin. She noticed Cao Wei arriving and her tears flowed down from her swollen red eyes: “Cao-ge, what should we do, it’s all my fault *sobs*, it’s all because Cheng-ge helped me to drink on behalf, and I didn’t know that he had gastric problems. We stayed till the end of the session and then he told me that he was feeling unwell. When I checked on him, he was already vomiting blood.”[note: Ge = brother, not necessarily blood-related]
“What did the doctor say when he was sent in?”
“That it may be acute stomach bleeding…”
Cao Wei could only hear half of what Qian Lu was saying when he felt his head throbbing with anxiety and anger.
It was not a rare occasion for artists in this entertainment industry to accompany the investors for drinking sessions. But Cao Wei had warned Qian Lu before that the investors this time round were not easy-going people. He only had two artists – Qian Lu and Cheng Zhi, assigned to him, of course he would fight for opportunities for them, but Qian Lu just had to go against his wish.
Naturally, he understood why Qian Lu was getting anxious. In this industry, a female artist’s values were their beauty and youthfulness. However, after working as an agent for many years, he had seen everything. There were far too many young and beautiful women and obviously opportunities were hard to get by.
“*sobs* Cao-ge, is Cheng-ge going to be okay? I’m scared… if something were to really happen to him, what should I do… *sobs*”
Cao Wei was feeling anxious and simply did not have the mood to lecture Qian Lu at this moment. He stared closely at the emergency room’s light as he prayed in his heart. Please be okay, please be okay…
It was not only for his sake but more because of his worries for Cheng Zhi. This twenty-two-year-old young man had been working under him for three years already. Although he did not have much achievement, he was a sincere and honest person who had rather good prospects.
As the doors of the emergency room opened, Cao Wei immediately went up with Qian Lu following close behind.
“Who is Cheng Zhi’s family member?”
“Here, here! How is he doing now, is he out of danger?”
The doctor who came out first took off his surgical mask. His expression was solemn as he breathed out a deep sigh. He looked at Cao Wei and Qian Lu as he spoke in a low voice: “We have done our best. My deepest condolences to you.”
Qian Lu suddenly fell on her knees and Cao Wei also felt his legs turning weak. His body suddenly lowered, and he realized that the doctor had tapped his shoulder: “If everything is verified, please follow our nurses to the reception counter and sign Mr Cheng Zhi’s death certificate.”
Cao Wei stood blankly on the spot with his mind blanked out.
The doctors and nurses came out one by one. Not too long later, Cheng Zhi was pushed out and his body was covered with a white cloth. Cao Wei could not believe that he had indeed left the world. A twenty-two-year-old young man whose life had just begun.
Cao Wei could feel a lump in his throat. Qian Lu had already stood up from the floor and was bawling like she was going to stop breathing. He took a glance of Qian Lu and could not stop his tears from flowing. It was as if the air had turned stagnant, Cao Wei tugged the edge of the white cloth on top of Cheng Zhi’s face and gently pulled it away.
The young man’s pale yet extremely delicate facial features were revealed little by little.
That moment, their eyes met.
The beautiful young man who was announced dead showed an awkward expression. He blinked his eyes and asked hesitantly: “… Do you guys want to… resuscitate me again?”
Cheng Zhi was then transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, and later again to the normal ward. The doctors’ expression when he saw him was as if Columbus had discovered a new land. At the same moment, new-land-Cheng also felt extremely shocked as he stared at his… pair of hands.
What a pair of perfect looking hands, soft skin, and tender flesh and the joints distinctively craved. Such slenderness, such gorgeousness. But the problem was… these were not his hands.
Cheng Zhi stared at the similarly pale and tender looking arms. After he confirmed that this pair of arms that were much slender than the other young men of the same age, did not belong to him, he finally came to terms with reality.
As it turned out, he was truly dead.
When he woke up from the hospital and heard someone calling him Cheng Zhi, for a moment, he thought that he had survived after being resuscitated at the hospital. Yet, even when his name was still his, the body was not. He was reborn and had changed bodies.
The original Cheng Zhi was an actor who had debuted at eighteen years old and it was seven years into his career.
Within the seven years period, he successfully became a first-class actor. Regardless of the television dramas or the movies reviews, they were all well-received. He had changed his career track from an idol into power faction actor and he swept all the awards that he could take. Just before he died from the stampede, he was even nominated for the best actor award – he was almost standing out among those veteran actors.
His teacher once said that he was the most talented actor from the batch of students who graduated from the film and performing arts school. In fact, he proved his teacher right. But who could have imagined that he would die from a stampede incident?
If he had any chance to look at the headlines on the next day, it would surely be a reign of terror.
Cheng Zhi gave in to reality as he dropped his head and examined his new body again. It was not that he was disgusted with his new body – it was indeed on the skinnier range – but he could easily tell just by the way he leaned back, it felt and was a totally different height from before. He looked down and opened his patient gown and Cheng Zhi could not resist howling hysterically in his heart.
My manly abdominal muscles and my daddy long legs… goddammit they’re gone.
The ward’s door got pushed open from outside and a tall and well-built middle-aged man walked in. He was wearing his pyjamas and had short beard stubbles on his chin. Cheng Zhi had met this guy before and on their first-time meeting eye-to-eye, he freaked out and took two big steps backwards.
He stood by the bedside and asked: “Still feeling unwell? Qian Lu collapsed after she knew you were alright, so I just got someone to send her home. We will talk about the future when you get better. How are you feeling right now?”
Cheng Zhi did not know Cao Wei, neither did he know the Qian Lu that he mentioned. He wanted to say something, but nothing seemed appropriate. In the end, he asked, “Ge, do you have a mirror?”
Cao Wei was completely puzzled by the request but still ended up swiftly fishing out his mobile, switched it to front camera mode and passed it to Cheng Zhi. Cheng Zhi only shot a quick glance of the display screen before he immediately turned off mobile and returned it back. Subsequently, Cheng Zhi put on this complicated expression that he never showed before, and he turned and asked Cao Wei, “Have you ever wondered if I have a dick?”
Cao Wei: “…???”
That was the first question Cheng Zhi had from his direct observation of himself. The moment he had seen his own face, he even felt himself squeezing his legs together to confirm his gender.
He was indeed still a man, but the face… honestly speaking, that was one of the prettiest faces without makeup that he would give at least eight points and above… for a female artist.
The person he saw through the camera was fair skinned that looked slightly ill. Yet it was exactly that slightly ill component that made him look exceptionally delicate and pitiful. Regardless if it was his eyebrows or his beautiful straight nose, he cannot sense any manliness at all.
For a man to look like that… Cheng Zhi felt so upset that he could tear up. Cao Wei on the other hand was almost as disarrayed and breaking down just like the younger man. Initially, he had quite a few things he planned to brief, but Cheng Zhi’s questions made his mind go blank again. He paused and continued his conversation: “You don’t have to worry about the hospital bills, and I’ll settle the company matters as well. Just rest well for a few days and I’ll bring you anything you need later.”
As he finished speaking his mind, he looked at Cheng Zhi and felt strange about the situation. From the moment Cheng Zhi opened his eyes, he could sense that something major was different from before. He was unsure how to describe that feeling so he probed, “Xiao-Zhi?”
Cheng Zhi’s conditioned reflex made him answer a simple hum to the nickname and that made Cao Wei slightly more relaxed. Following which, he immediately reflected upon himself that as a man in his thirties and yet he imagined such a scene that would only appear on those television dramas. “I’m going off then, I’ll try to make something out from this incident. For something so major to happen to you, the investors should explain for themselves.”
Cao Wei was leaving when he heard Cheng Zhi’s voice coming from behind, “Ge, thank you.”
Cao Wei looked distracted for a moment and the strange feeling he had in his heart instantly disappeared. Even though Cheng Zhi was acting a little weird, he was indeed still Cheng Zhi – he must be overthinking.
After sending Cao Wei off, Cheng Zhi took a long time before he snapped back to reality. He was still afraid to get off the bed himself, so he asked for the nurse to help him retrieve the clothes that he was wearing when he got sent in. Luckily, his mobile and important identification were together with it as well. Cheng Zhi finally felt relieved from the confusing and vacant state that he was in.
On the identification card was Cheng Zhi’s name but with a different face that was totally different from before. He was unsure if this place was the same year as he was in before he got reborn. If it were, that would mean he became a few years younger than he originally was. He finished examining his identification card with complicated feelings and retrieved his mobile which was switched off for some reason.
Not too long after he switched it back on, a burst of notifications began popping up nonstop. Cheng Zhi was amazed that there were over ten missed calls but from an unknown number so he was unsure who had called him.
Cheng Zhi looked through his contacts and his photo albums and realized that he did not have many contacts on his social messaging accounts. However, he could tell from remarks that the owner of this body was also from the show business industry. The profile picture said Agent Cao Wei was the man that had just left – it was until now that Cheng Zhi finally realised that his full name was called Cao Wei.
Half a day later, Cheng Zhi went through all the information that he could gather and came to a conclusion on his situation: He was a real invisible little sissy that had been in this industry for more than three years. His best achievement was the two advertisements saved in his mobile and one of them was just a supporting role whose screen time flashed past quickly. Cheng Zhi could utterly understand how hard it was to stand out among the others in the entertainment career.
He smacked his lips together for a while and out of the sudden, his mobile rang. Cheng Zhi took a quick glance and it was that unknown number that called him several times before. He did not think much as he pressed the answer button. He could hear some chaotic noise coming from the background and it was as if the caller did not expect this call to get through and was still talking to another person. The phone was put through for two to three seconds when a high pitched female voice came through the phone.
“Aiyo, you actually know how to pick up a call? You are so outstanding now that you are a young celebrity and you won’t even answer your phone?!” the caller’s voice was not only high pitched; it was vulgar at the same time. She started grumbling with a harsh tone and two sentences later began to hurl abuse.
Cheng Zhi had no idea what the purpose of the call was as he listened for a short while. He filtered the vulgarities and asked, “Excuse me, who is speaking?”
The caller paused for a moment and immediately returned with an intense counter-attack: “You goddamn little bastard, I knew you don’t care about this family at all, and you don’t see me as your mother. Not only did you break off contact with us, now you don’t even recognize us?! I knew from the start you are up to no-good. Great, serves you right to live as a nobody forever, the entire Cheng family deserves…”
Cheng Zhi was amused by the string of abusive language used. He rubbed his temples and replied with laughter, “You’re my mother? What a coincidence, I happened to have something that needs your consultation. I am hospitalized right now; do you have any money? If you do, could you help me–”
The phone call abruptly ended as the beeping sound could be heard. Cheng Zhi had no idea why but he felt like the air had turned fresher.
He did not have any parents from that world and had been placed in the care of an orphanage since he was born. Even as he ventured his way in the entertainment business, he was still all alone in that world. That was why even after this dramatic turn of events, he still felt like things were unreal. Instead of being reluctant to part with his previous life, he was more curious about his new environment and new lease of life. If there were anything that he was reluctant to part with, it would be his idol goddess and own pair of daddy long legs.
He put his mobile aside and instantly tossed the incident with that caller who claimed to be his mother at the back of his mind. A mother who called her son a little bastard – no wonder the original owner of this body did not bother to save her phone number. Since the owner did not want to bother with it, he shall remain at a respectful distance.
