Chapter 3: See You at the Narrow End
She originally wanted to lie, but his expression made her decide to be honest.
She quietly said that she had fallen ill the last month and all the money she had made from working was spent. She had gone to her father to ask for living expenses but he had refused. She kept waiting near his house. It wasn’t until his wife and son had come back in the evening that he had conceded because he couldn’t bear to lose face.
Qin Ge was stunned, then without saying anything, he reached out and held her in his embrace.
He was so strong that she thought he was trying to strangle her instead of hug her. Like this, their relationship began.
Lin Siwei started to hate her for this. After all, she had been in love with Qin Ge for ten years already. Gossips and rumors began to spread around the school but she (Hai Lan) didn’t care. She loved Qin Ge, it was not due to his appearance or identity. It was all genuine. Before he came into her life to wreck havoc in her world, she never thought that there would’ve been someone who she could be happy with. Sadly, women sometimes think too much of themselves and believe that they have acquired that man’s heart.
The professor once told her, “Hai Lan, although you don’t spend much energy on your grades, you are more intelligent and careful than anyone else. Stay and help me.”
There’s a saying that scholars die as close friends. After her graduation, she went on to work in the Research Institute. After her breakup with Qin Ge, she didn’t leave the institute and instead went to investigate Dunhuang with the professor. Even though there was gossip about how she was dumped by Qin Ge floating around, even when she knew that one day their paths would cross again.
She didn’t have many things, she had already lost Qin Ge. Now, if she lost her favorite job, she would be left with nothing. Or perhaps, she never did have Qin Ge. When he left the house, she was free to tear up the check like in the movies, but she wasn’t able to. Had she been already waiting for this to happen?
Unexpectedly, Qin Ge’s parents and sister, Qin Fei, came. Qin Ge’s parents knew her but they never liked her. Qin Ge’s mother gave her a look of contempt. Qin Fei, on the other hand, couldn’t stop herself from saying, “sister, let me help you with some things.”
Qin Ge’s mother scolded “You busybody!”
Hai Lan was quick to shake her head.
But then, Lin Siwei stepped in and said, “I’ll help you.”
Hai Lan frowned slightly, Lin Siwei leaned towards Qin Ge and smiled at him. “I’ll help Hai Lan and you help me, alright?”
“Alright.” He answered with a smile.
Hai Lan smiled at Lin Siwei and told her, “the shovel has no eyes, it would be bad if it accidentally touches your delicate skin.”
Lin Siwei’s expression changed. Qin Ge faintly said, “Xiao Xia, help Miss Lin hold her things.”
Xiao Xia was Qin Ge’s driver, in the blink of an eye he had grabbed everything from her arms. It was a very quick and clever move.
Everyone in front of the tomb fell into an eerie silence.
From where she stood, she could clearly hear the sarcastic remarks from several of her colleagues on the archaeological team. Some were saying that if she had known it would become like this, she shouldn’t have acted like that.
The lump in her throat got bigger. Dignity was a joke, but if people saw her crying, what would she have left?
