Chapter 45 – Qi Zheng’s marriage
Old Madam Shen realized that everything was vexing her these days and seemingly detected more grey hairs along her temples when she woke up this morning which were likely caused by Shen Ziqiao, hence her abomination towards this damn girl increases.
There was yet any news from the Qi’s. When Old Madam Shen contemplated that if Shen Ziqiao knew of the dowry that Pan Shi would be given to her two years later, she could not perceive what kind of trouble Shen Ziqiao would have stirred up then.
She must not be allowed to know how much Pan Shi had left for her.
Anyway, these past years she had found all kinds of demerits to drive all Pan Shi’s people out of the manor to other places and now, the servants in the household were mostly her trusted confidants, thus she was not afraid that someone might gossip about it to Shen Ziqiao.
Mama Li flusteredly entered and saw that Old Madam Shen was leaning askew on a big pillow seemingly lost in thought. She slowed down her steps and softly called out, “Old Madam…..”
Old Madam Shen regained her senses when she heard Mama Li’s voice and instantly opened her eyes with an astute brightness fleeting across those eyes, “You are back from the Qi family.”
“Madam Qi has fallen sick thus is unable to send you any news.’ Mama Li let all the maidservants to retreat before whispering next to Old Madam Shen’s ear.
Why the sudden sickness? Old Madam Shen realized something unexpected might have happened when she heard those words, “What’s happened?”
Mama Li explained, “Duke Anguo has already wavered about the marriage, but the Imperial Palace suddenly sent over the Empress’ decree which stated that the Qi’s eldest young master’s marriage will be decided by the Empress herself and Madam Qi is not allowed to meddle with it.”
Little Gu Shi must have fallen sick with madness!
Old Madam Shen knitted her brows tightly once she heard everything, “Why would the Empress…?”
“Did you forget that Qi’s eldest young master is the nephew of the Empress.” Mama Li reminded her.
“I have indeed forgotten about this fact. Nothing can be done then. Let’s just look again.” Old Madam Shen replied and felt some phlegm in her throat, hence covered her mouth while coughing out several times.
Mama Li promptly carried forward the white jade sputum pot and lightly patted Old Madam Shen’s back, “Old wife Feng said Third Miss went over yesterday to ask for something. It seemed she might have known something.”
Old Madam Shen’s expression slightly changed, “Who had been mouthing in front of her?”
“She might have wildly speculated.” Mama Li responded.
“Think of a way to let that third girl stay in the village for several days.” Old Madam Shen coldly stated. She originally thought she could still wait for another two years but now it seems she must not wait anymore.
Mama Li looked at Old Madam Shen’s expression and knew what she wished to do, thus she hastily nodded her head in agreement.
In the past, one could randomly just find any of her faults to drive her out and let her stayed in the village for several days, but unknowingly these days she seemed to have a complete change of personality that not only one not able to find her mistakes, one would have to constantly be on guard and not provoked her or else the one that would exactly got driven out would be oneself instead.
Old Madam Shen did sense the changes in Shen Ziqiao but she actually thought it was not worthy to be taken notice of. However, Mama Li did not think the same as she eventually felt that the current Third Miss was very much different as if she had been substituted by another person that though looked like Third Miss but was in fact not her.
Without a doubt, she would not have dared to voice this out.
She was merely a bondservant while Shen Ziqiao was the master, regardless of how much the Old Madam dislikes her.
Mama Li waited upon Old Madam Shen for her afternoon nap and then left the room. Her mind was still filled with thoughts of how to make Shen Ziqiao go to the village when she saw Shen Ziyang entering the courtyard door.
“Fourth Young Master, you are back from school?” Mama Li astonishingly greeted him with a smile.
Shen Ziyang was wearing a crimson red unlined long gown with a jade belt fastened on his waist. His mannerism was rather childish, not considered as the smart and beautiful type but was somewhat adorned with the trait of a rich and powerful nobility’s son. He took a quick look into the room and asked, “Mama Li, is grandmother taking a nap?”
Mama Li replied, “Just fell asleep. Old Madam has been feeling stuffy here these two days.” She patted her chest and heaved a sigh.
“Who has been angering my grandmother?” Shen Ziyang exclaimed with a furious glare.
“Who else can it be?” Mama Li sighed. “Don’t be vexed, Fourth Young Master. Third Miss’ temperament is simply like that, even Old Madam is inured to it already.”
Shen Ziyang had nowhere to dispel his anger when he could not get the guidance he was trying to get from the Ninth Wangye because of Shen Ziqiao, thus hearing that she had caused the the Old Madam’s chest pain, he felt that Shen Ziqiao was truly too insensible, “She is getting more outrageous now that father is not here.”
Mama Li felt very pleased inwardly as it would indeed be ideal should Shen Ziyang be the one to step in and handle this matter and she could just be a bystander.
As Old Madam Shen doted on Shen Ziyang, hence he simply did not have the least awareness of respect for Shen Ziqiao even though he was the son of a concubine. He even thought he had the same opportunity like Shen Zikai to become the head of the Shen family.
Shen Ziyang came to Qiao Xin Courtyard spitting with anger, but was stopped by Cui Ping in front of the door, “Is the Fourth Master looking for Third Miss?”
“Where is Jiaojiao?” Shen Ziyang asked.
“Third Miss is in the Elder Young Master’s study.” Cui Ping informed him.
Shen Ziyang slammed on the door, “Preposterous! She actually dares to go make havoc in elder brother’s study while he is away.”
Cui Ping laughed hollowly but deep within she was actually saying if the Elder Young Master was to know, he would most likely be there to open the study door for Third Miss personally. Who in the whole family didn’t know that the Elder Young Master only regarded Third Miss as his own younger sister and simply was not concerned with Shen Ziyang and the other two younger sisters.
“I will give her a talk.” Once Shen Ziyang finished his words, he turned around and went to the front courtyard where Shen Zikai resided.
Shen Zikai was a chaste and a strict self-disciplined soldier. He was eighteen this year, unmarried and did not even keep any chambermaids. There were only two maidservants that served him and they were naturally courteous to Shen Ziqiao as they knew the care and concern Shen Zikai had for her. As Shen Ziqiao had a bad temper, she would yell and shouted at them thus they were not close to her. Seeing that Shen Ziqiao took the initiative to come over today, they naturally would take the Elder Young Master’s orders to heart and carefully serve her.
The two maidservants were Shui Lian and Shui Ying.
“Where is Jiaojiao?” Shen Ziyang arrived and shouted at Shui Lian who was carrying a tray of tea and fruit, interrogating the whereabouts of Shen Ziqiao.
Shui Lian turned to acknowledge Shen Ziyang and curtsied, “Fourth Young Master.”
“I am asking where is Jiaojiao?” Shen Ziyang loudly asked. If this was not the elder brother’s place, he would have charged in already and been so polite.
“Is there anything the Fourth Young Master needs from the Third Miss?” Shui Lian asked.
“Ask so much, just call Jiaojiao out for me.” Shen Ziyang annoyingly shouted.
Shui Lian smilingly remarked, “Fourth Young Master is truly imposing and doesn’t even address the Third Miss as elder sister. All along Master has two legal born children and if this is not a known fact…..one might have thought that Fourth Young Master is also a legal born child.”
Shen Ziyang’s face flushed up with humiliation and raged, “Impudent! A damned servant like you dares to lecture this young master?”
“Nubi dares not.” Shui Lian finished her words and left with a lacquer serving tray which enraged Shen Ziyang into stamping his feet.
Did she believe that by not telling him he wouldn’t find Shen Ziqiao? Shen Ziyang then followed Shui Lian to Shen Zikai’s study.
Shen Ziqiao was reading a book inside the study.
