Devil's Political Marriage - Chapter 49 Part 1
DPM Chapter 49-First Kiss Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77
When Ye Fan woke up, he felt something hard poking against his head again. He looked up, his eyes meeting Wu Xingyun’s.
Wu Xingyun was clearly embarrassed, his face flushed red in the dim light.
In his heart Ye Fan took some pleasure at finding out the other’s little secret. However he didn’t want to infuriate the soldier, so Ye Fan was smart enough to not show it.
He sat up from Wu Xingyun’s lap quickly, asking rather disingenuously: “Is it morning?”
Wu Xingyun nodded: “Wake your Uncle Luo up. Let’s get ready to go.”
Still blurry-eyed after being woken up, Luo Guo noted the blanket and coat wrapped around him, saying apologetically: “I’m dragging you two down.”
“Uncle Luo, don’t say that,” Ye Fan rejoined immediately, “We’re gonna be the ones depending on you when we get to Xi’an.”
Ye Fan’s words thankfully eased Luo Guo’s inner sense of guilt and inferiority. The older man began to earnestly study the map by the firelight.
Wu Xingyun threw Ye Fan a somewhat surprised glance. Luo Guo’s researcher status had been revoked. Heavens knew what Xi’an was actually like. Only if they actually got there, could they know who would depend on whom. The words ‘depending on you later’ was Ye Fan being strictly comforting. “He’s very good to his own people……” Wu Xingyun thought for no reason. Then he remembered how it’d been for him on Yuanxing. The Night Demon hadn’t been good to him one bit. Obviously, Mozun had never considered Wu Xingyun as one of his own.
Reflecting, Wu Xingyun’s mood became unspeakably low. He forced himself to think of it differently, managing to feel a little relieved. Mozun and himself—they’d never been going the same way.
Luo Guo confirmed that their intended route was not too difficult to walk. Although it’d been dangerous in the past, now a variety of roads had been built. Their problem would be the places where they couldn’t take the roads, and would have to detour. And the biggest problem was that most road signs were destroyed, meaning the only navigation tool they would have was a compass.
They started searching for a point of entry. The endless barbed wire anywhere they walked to made them despair, unable to find a way through.
Even the places you couldn’t reach on foot had guard posts!
The trio didn’t attempt attacking the guard posts. Ye Fan did think they might have a chance of success. On the other hand, Wu Xingyun felt there was a greater chance of injury.
In this new time where corpses and food rotted rapidly, any kind of wound spelled trouble. Even just a moderate injury could mean death.
They should survive, not fight.
After exploring about a month, the trio finally found a place to pass. Naturally, it was steep cliffs, almost impossible to climb.
Since they were so precipitous, no one bothered guarding them.
They took a rest underneath in the shadows, preparing the rope for their rock climbing, rolling it between their hands.
Wandering around with Ye Fan for a month, Wu Xingyun had discovered how important Ye Fan’s senses were. His perceptions were gradually becoming more sensitive. From the original range of fifty meters, Ye Fan now had a range of a hundred meters, enough for them to avoid mutant animals, along with other dangers, and also obtain food.
Although, because they weren’t getting enough variety in their diet, their skin was extremely itchy, especially Luo Guo. Because of his swelling skin, the older man couldn’t get a solid night’s sleep.
Unexpectedly though, despite the nasty environment and meat-only diet, Ye Fan was completely alright.
Luo Guo expressed his envy of Ye Fan’s mutation. Rubbing the new rope, Luo Guo said: “Ye Fan, when we get to Xi’an, you must let Luo Ying examine you. She studies biology, she’ll be able to ascertain what’s going on with your body.”
Being with Luo Guo the past days, Wu Xingyun knew the man’s general circumstances. He had one child, a daughter named Luo Ying. She was twenty-eight years old, with a PhD in biology. Originally she worked at the Beijing Institute, before transferring about a year ago to Xi’an. Moreover, Wu Xingyun had heard a lot of new expressions spoken by Luo Guo. For example—“Saer substance.”
Stomping on the long plant fibers they’d collected, and pulling out any thorns, Wu Xingyun inquired to Luo Guo: “You often talk about ‘Saer substance,’ what exactly does that mean?”
Luo Guo answered: “It’s……A newly discovered material that’s causing global-wide mutations. It’s useless to humans, furthermore harmful. But it’s good for plants and animals. They’re totally becoming stronger and smarter! Look at the rattan in your hand. It’s an ordinary plant now, but after mutation maybe it’ll comprehend how to ambush man?”
Wu Xingyun laughed, unconsciously glancing at Ye Fan.
Ye Fan, roasting a meter long hare, felt Wu Xingyun’s look. He smirked, saying to Wu Xingyun: “See what I’m doing? If it wasn’t for me, I’ll remind you, you’d already be dead. How are you going to repay my life-saving kindness?”
Wu Xingyun cursed Ye Fan in his heart, and his sudden mood didn’t elude Ye Fan’s perception.
Taking out a knife, Ye Fan cut a small piece of rabbit meat and held it out to Wu Xingyun: “Don’t be mad, I’m just joking.”
Eying the bite being offered and feeling placated, Wu Xingyun opened his mouth for Ye Fan to feed him. Afterwards, Ye Fan expectantly asked: “Is it tasty?”
Wu Xingyun’s face showed a smile: “Tasty.”
Foolishly staring at Wu Xingyun, it took Ye Fan a minute to get back to cooking the remaining meat.
Luo Guo felt dissatisfied watching this, eating his share while inwardly sighing to himself. Young people were being hard-pressed. They couldn’t find a wife, so they made do with a man. Well, Luo Guo figured he should turn a blind eye……But his portion was burnt!
They stayed under the cliffs for about ten days, until they’d made long enough ropes for climbing.
